A student has landed their dream job having swapped the history books for the toolkit and followed in her family’s footsteps.

Catherine Burrin completed a history degree, but now has a job working in Greece as a Flotilla Technician for Sunsail, an international leading sailing holiday company, having studied at Falmouth Marine School.

Catherine came to Falmouth with her family on holiday and visited Falmouth Marine School’s open day.

“We popped in so dad could have a look at the marine engineering workshops, but as soon as I saw the facilities and talked with the staff I knew this is where I should be,” she explained.

Catherine was the only girl on the Light Marine Engineering course, however that only made her work harder, she said.

“I love being a girl on an engineering course as it challenges you and the expectations of you. I would love to help break down barriers and encourage more girls to study engineering,” she explained.

“Every day presents a different challenge, the tutors are so supportive and you know they want you to do well.”

Catherine secured her position during the College’s annual industry day.
Head of College Justin Olosunde said “we pride ourselves in being a career college”.

“We ensure that we work closely with the marine industry to ensure that our courses are fit for purpose and that they will lead directly to employment. Our Industry day is just one way in which we do that. Catherine and many other students across the four marine disciplines secured employment at this event, which is fantastic.”
