Cornish students have been benefiting from the expertise of a local adventure sports industry company while hitting the surf.

Adventure Sport students from Duchy College have spent a week based at Polzeath developing their surf coaching skills.

Owner of coasteering and surfing business Saltwater Safari, Pete Smith, has been teaching the students about delivering up to date surfing techniques and skills, group management in the water, risk assessment practice and providing an insight into running a successful business which is adrenaline filled.

There are around 88,000 surfers in the county which represents 17.49% of Cornwall’s population. The Economic Impact Assessment of Surfing in the UK, a report by St Agnes based environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage, indicates that surfers contribute about £153m to the Duchy’s economy in direct spend every year, all year round.

“It was great to get involved with the students and give them a chance to develop their leadership skills in a dangerous environment,” Pete said.

“I was pleased to see the students developing and thinking about the planning and management of groups. It’s great having the skills to participate in all these adventurous activities but the Duchy students have taken it one step further and are now competent with leading others.”

Level 3 Adventure Sport student, Henry Morris, said it is great to have “specialist people deliver on our course and we all learn so much from their experience”.

“Learning to lead surf coaching sessions has been really good fun and we are all looking forward to working with Pete again in the future.”

Team Lead for Sport and Outdoor Adventure, Darren Evans, said working with industry experts is “key to ensuring the students are fully prepared for work.”

“Not only were we able to assess the students in real life situations they also gained so much valuable knowledge and skills from working with such an expert in the industry.”

“100% of our Adventure Sports students gained employment in the industry last year, a statistic that we are very proud of.”
