Award winning hair stylist provides a live demo to students

The Cornwall College Group Camborne | Saltash | St Austell 16-18 | Adult

Over 150 Hairdressing and Barbering students from across The Cornwall College Group have enjoyed a fantastic live demo from one of the best hair dressers in the UK, Shane Bennett.  Shane, who runs an award winning salon in Northern Ireland, is passionate about passing on his skills and expertise to the next generation.

Louise Lodge, who is on an Advanced Technical Hairdressing course with Cornwall College, had the opportunity to be a model in the demo and Shane cut and styled her hair. Louise commented on the experience: “I was excited and a bit nervous about being on stage but it was a great experience, Shane did a funky but soft looking short haircut on me and it looks brilliant.”

Shane Bennett  is a three time winner of Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year and his career has gone from strength to strength over the past few years; his team made history last year by being the first Northern Irish salon to take home the desirable ‘Artistic Team of the Year award’ at the British Hairdressing Awards held in 2015. Then in April, Shane moved his multi-award-winning team to new Salon with a modern and minimalist feel based in the city centre of Lisburn.

Louise added: “This demo was a great for anyone currently training to go into hairdressing, barbering or creative theatrical hair, there was definitely something for everyone to take away from the day.  It was a great experience and it was inspiring to see Shane at work and to see the potential career that hairdressing has to offer.”

Around 170 students and their lecturers from three Cornwall College Campuses watched intently while Shane and his team performed the demo on the Keay theatre stage. Four student models were used for various examples in hair methods such as artistic hair styling, creative cutting and hair colouring.

Shane Bennett said: “It was a phenomenal day with a great bunch of students and I’m hopeful it has inspired them to go and progress their careers. The idea from the demo is that it will be motivational for them and also share what’s happened in my journey in hairdressing. This will then hopefully start them out in theirs, showing the students what they can achieve and where they can go within the very dynamic hairdressing industry.”

Curriculum Lead for Hair & Beauty, Margaret Butfield said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to be able to show students where their career could lead them including the very different directions they could take and how to get there. We’re really grateful to Shane and his excellent team for taking time out of their very busy schedule and giving this engaging demo for our students.”
