It’s ‘work hard and play hard’ for students at Cornwall College St Austell with the creation of an exciting new social space.
Named ‘The Space’, the facility was officially opened by Chair of Governors Dr Ian Tunbridge OBE in a festive celebration attended by students, staff and guests.
‘The Space’ is a multi-functional area, furnished with lounge seating, a chill-out room to watch DVDs, and various forms of entertainment for students to enjoy including a pool table, dart board, and multiple video game consoles.
Deputy Head of Campus Kym O’Mara described ‘The Space’ as a place for students to “help balance their studies”.
“The social and enrichment elements that go alongside studying at Cornwall College are so important to us and help to provide our learners with a well-rounded and enjoyable learning experience,” she continued.
“‘The Space’ has been created as an all-inclusive environment for learners to relax and enjoy themselves within our college community.”
The design of ‘The Space’ has been directed by learners to ensure a place everyone can enjoy.
Learning Enrichment Officer Teri Cobbett highlighted the significance of the students’ contribution to the creation of the facility.
“Students from various areas of the campus worked together on the finishing touches and have created something very special,” she said.
“With Art & Design learners creating the signage, Plumbing & Carpentry learners fabricating the decor and furniture, engineering students creating a plaque for the wall and our professional cookery students providing festive treats for the opening celebrations, ‘The Space’ really is a showcase of their talents.”
Having an area like this is not only important as a place for learners to take a break from their studies, but also to be around staff that can support them with their mental wellbeing.
“‘The Space’ is somewhere they can be themselves and enjoy a different perspective of college life,” Teri added.
Guests at the opening celebration were treated to some festive live music by a student band from the campus’ Creative Academy, while they sampled what the new area has to offer. As main sponsor and supporter of the Cornwall College Student Union (CCSU), Dominos Pizza were on hand, generously donating free pizza to students.
Seventeen-year-old student Jake Daniel from St Austell, is the Vice Chair of the CCSU and said ‘The Space’ is “amazing”.
“It’s great to have a place where there are so many interesting things to do. It really brings everyone together,” he added.
