After an early career in the insurance industry, where she gained extensive commercial experience, Thelma moved into the construction industry developing invaluable close links with all aspects of the sector. As part of her interest in encouraging women into that industry, she is the Hon. President of the South West Women in Construction. Thelma was awarded the OBE in 2010 for services to economic development in Cornwall and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Thelma gained her Certificate in Management at the University of Plymouth. Former Chair of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Economic Partnership for six years, Thelma was also closely involved with the delivery of the EU Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and is a member of the Convergence Local Management Committee.
Thelma is currently Chair of the Cornwall Business Partnership and Vice Chair of the Devon and Cornwall Business School. She is Trustee of Cornwall Care Limited, member of the Cornwall Newquay Airport Consultative Forum and of the Council of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and Industry. A Non-Executive Board member of the Architect Centre Devon and Cornwall, Thelma is also a member of the National Architectural Club.
Thelma joined the Board in December 2007. She is Chair of the Search and Governance Committee and a member of the Finance and Resources Committee.
Thelma comes from South East Cornwall where her family had a small horticulture business. Her interests include architectural design, travel and gardening.
