Thelma Sorensen comes from south east Cornwall where her family had a small horticulture business. Her early career was in the insurance industry where she gained extensive commercial experience and was closely associated with a large, privately owned construction company.
Thelma chairs several key organisations in the south west; the Cornwall Business Partnership which speaks for the private sector in Cornwall; the vice chair of the Devon and Cornwall Business Council. She is a member of the Convergence Local Management Committee.
Thelma is also a Non-Executive Board member of the Architecture Centre, Devon and Cornwall, a Trustee of Cornwall Care Ltd, a member of the National Architectural Club, the Cornwall Newquay Airport Consultative Forum and the Council of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and Industry. As part of her interest in encouraging women into the Construction Industry, she is the Hon President of the South West Women in Construction.
Thelma joined the Board in December 2007 and is the Chairman of the Search and Governance Committee and a member of the Finances and Resources Committee.
In her spare time, she enjoys travel and gardening. She was awarded the OBE in 2010 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
