Falmouth Marine School Falmouth LEVEL: 3 Marine Engineering & Boatbuilding


This course will give the learner the skills to develop a career within the marine sector and there are opportunities for work experience and employer links projects that will help to position yourself with employers and organisations working in the marine sector.

Located in Falmouth, home to one of the largest natural harbours in the world, this programme provides a career route to those learners considering employment within the marine engineering, marine construction and marine design industries. The marine school has excellent links to local marine companies including A&P Ship repair and dry dock facility, Pendennis Super Yachts and the busy merchant shipping port of Falmouth.

The newly constructed and equipped campus provides an almost unprecedented level of access to those marine industries based within the South West peninsula. We have a modern and well equipped marine engineering workshop, a well-equipped marine construction facility and a composite workshop with access to the latest resin transfusion technologies. The new marine engineering workshop has been developed in consultation with local marine engineering companies with much support from Mylor Yacht Harbour’s Marine Team and Vetus, an internationally operating developer, manufacturer and trading company supplying marine engines, generators and technical equipment for recreational craft and small commercial vessels.

The qualification has been developed to provide learners with a knowledge and understanding of the practices and processes of marine engineering and cover the knowledge, understanding and skills that have been identified in order to operate effectively in a job role within the Marine Technologies sector and is a natural progression route to those who have successfully completed the Certificate in marine Engineering in year 1 of their studies with the college.

Ideal if:

This course is intended for those considering a career within the marine engineering, industries and gives the learner an opportunity to consider progression to an apprenticeship or employment within the marine industry.

There are a number of differing options for enrolment to this course and this might be completion of a first year of level 2 study at the college, on completion of secondary education or as a mature learner; some knowledge of the marine industries would be appropriate for learners applying for the course, however for mature learners this may be the wish to work within the marine sector.

There are a large number of opportunities for the learner from the successful completion of this course and these could be to employment with the following sectors:

Commercial Yacht/ Commercial vessel industry, Super Yacht Industry, Off-shore Industry

Merchant Shipping Industry, Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary

Marine construction industry (e.g. Pendennis Shipyard, A&P Shipyard, Princess Yachts)



You’ll need:

To have achieved (predicted to achieve) 4of C-A (4-9) grades at GCSE. Those learners looking to continue their studies at the college must have successfully completed their level 2 studies with a Credit grade and to have made satisfactory progress with English and Maths (if appropriate). For those learners under the age of 19 at entry who do not have A-C (4-9) grades GCSE English and Maths, there is an expectation that these studies will continue alongside the main programme of learning.

Enrolment for mature learners will be by qualification and previous relevant experience.

All learners will be expected to attend interview and assessment.

You’ll learn:

Units of study for this course will be:

Safe and effective working in the marine industry

Principles of marine construction and components

Installation and repair of Marine Engines

Installation and repair of Marine Propulsion Systems

The units of study will be delivered through a blend of practical and theoretical study with learners spending approximately 50% of their study time within the marine engineering workshops.


To attend college for 3 days per week for one academic year (36 weeks) to complete the qualification and satisfactorily pass the units of study to be awarded certification.

Assessment will be through a mix of on-line test, centre marked exam and practical assessments supported by formal report.

The qualification is graded as Pass, Credit or Distinction

This course is not applicable to learners wishing to pass directly to Higher Education or Higher level apprenticeship.

Kevin James Marine Engineering Course Manager

Kevin grew up in Cornwall and went to Cape Cornwall School.  Kevin has always tinkered on boats and spent several years working as a Head Greenkeeper before retraining as a Marine Engineer at Falmouth Marine School.  This is where he discovered his passion for teaching others and completed his teacher training.  Kevin worked in the industry as a self-employed marine engineer before returning to Falmouth Marine School to train the marine engineers of the future.
