Falmouth Marine School Falmouth LEVEL: 3 Marine Engineering & Boatbuilding

This course will give the learner the skills to develop a career within the marine sector and there are opportunities for work experience, employer links and research projects that will position you with employers and organisations working in the marine sector.

Located in Falmouth, home to one of the largest natural harbours in the world, this programme provides a career route to those learners considering employment within the marine engineering, marine construction and marine design industries. The marine school has excellent links to local marine companies including A&P Ship repair and dry dock facility, Pendennis Super Yachts and the busy merchant shipping port of Falmouth.

The newly constructed and equipped Falmouth campus provides an almost unprecedented level of access to those marine industries based within the South West peninsula. We have a modern and well equipped marine engineering workshop, a well-equipped marine construction facility and a composite workshop with access to the latest resin transfusion technologies. Continuing work at the marine school has developed close links with the Universities of Exeter (Marine I Project, FabTest and Wave Hub facility) and Plymouth University (Marine Institute facility).

Falmouth Marine School has developed close links with the Super Yacht industry through the FdSc Operational Yacht Science Cadetship programme developed specifically for the United Kingdom Sailing Academy and also with the Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) industry, developing a Higher National Certificate Marine Engineering programme specifically for their Advanced Apprentice groups based in HM Naval base, Devonport.

The qualification has been developed to provide learners with an advanced knowledge and understanding of the practices and processes of engineering technologies and cover the knowledge, understanding and skills that have been identified in order to operate effectively in a job role within the Marine Technologies sector.

You’ll need:

To have achieved (predicted to achieve) 4, A-C (5-9) grades at GCSE to include English, maths and science.

Enrolment for mature learners will be by qualification and previous relevant experience.

All learners will be expected to attend interview and assessment.

You’ll learn:

Units of study for this course will be:

  • Engineering and environmental health and safety
  • Engineering mathematics
  • Engineering science
  • Computer aided design (CAD) techniques
  • Shipbuilding operations
  • Maintenance of hydraulic systems and components
  • Engineering design process
  • Engineering communications

The units of study will be delivered through a blend of practical and theoretical study with learners spending some time in the engineering, boat building and marine composite facilities.

Expect:

To attend college for 3 days per week for one academic year (36 weeks) to complete the qualification and satisfactorily pass the units of study to be awarded certification.

Assessment will be through a mix of on-line test and centre marked exam and assignment based assessments.

The qualification is graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction, UCAS points are as follows:

Pass                       24 points

Merit                     48 points

Distinction           72 points

It is expected that the learner will research the suitability of this programme of study for progression to their choice of Higher Education institutions.

Advanced apprenticeship programme with DE&S based in Devonport, Plymouth. Merchant Navy Cadetship programmes and Royal Navy/ Royal Fleet Auxiliary Cadetship programmes.

Other opportunities exist for those learners considering progression to local and National Apprenticeship schemes.
