BSc (Hons) Equitation Science

This programme focuses on the unique and varied area of equitation science and is designed for those who wish to further their knowledge of equitation and horse welfare. As well as providing a sound grounding in equine science, this programme continually appraises and evaluates aspects of equitation that have become established over many years. Emphasis is placed on developing the ability to critically evaluate and advance equestrian practice particularly in relation to training. You will have the opportunity to apply to solve challenging physical, behavioural and psychological problems exhibited by equids in novel contexts on theoretical and practical bases.

BSc (Hons) Equitation Science graduates will be capable of advanced scholarship and advanced practice and be able to conduct independent research in areas such as training techniques and equid welfare within any equestrian discipline.
Real-life scenarios will be used throughout your course and you will develop an appreciation of the importance of findings from other academic disciplines; such as sports science, psychology, philosophy and technical sciences.

This programme includes equine anatomy, health, nutrition, behaviour and training, welfare and legislation, sports science and of course equitation science. The programme is complemented by business and communication modules which will help you to develop further skills to secure a career on graduation. Periods of work-related learning in industry are also strongly encouraged. As a BSc (Hons) Equitation Science student you will be recognised for your ability to critically analyse and research established practices and emerging issues within the equestrian industry.

The programme is delivered through a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practicals. You will benefit from access to bespoke equipment for the measurement of equitation practice. Assessment is through a mixture of written work, practicals and examinations.
