This qualification is specifically for learners holding a Level 2 qualification in Gym Instruction or equivalent who are aspiring to branch out into the world of group exercise instruction and expand their skills to become qualified in Instructing Circuit Training. This course will develop your career on an employed or self-employed basis, and will allow you to add group classes to your clients in just two-weeks!

This qualification is mapped directly to The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) professional standards for a Circuit Group Exercise Instructor.

This course combines elements of both practical and theoretical learning where you will have the opportunity to apply the theory of circuit training in our on-campus sports hall, fully equipped gym and outdoor circuit training on one of our many green outdoor areas or 3G pitch.

Our industry-experienced lecturers are all fully qualified and practicing professionals themselves and will guide you every step of the way, enabling you to deliver quality circuit training classes. You’ll be learning everything industry requires. In essence, you’ll be developing all of the essential skills you need to become a Circuit Training Instructor.

  What You Will Learn

The aim of this two-week course is to provide those learners who already possess a valid Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification with the additional skills and knowledge required to plan and deliver a group circuit training session with apparently healthy adults. This may include older adults (50 plus) and (providing they are part of a larger adult group) young people aged 13-18.

  Entry Requirements

Learners must be at least 16 years old to complete the YMCA Level 2 Award in Instructing Group Circuit Training. In addition, learners completing the YMCA Level 2 Award in Instructing Group Circuit Training must hold a regulated Level 2 qualification mapped to either the CIMSPA Core Group Exercise Instructor or Gym Instructor professional standards.

  Work Experience

We have excellent links with local employers, providing amazing work experience and volunteering opportunities. Many of our students have gone on to employment abroad and you can gain experience in the Evolve Gym at Cornwall College.

  Assessment

The YMCA Level 2 Award in Instructing Group Circuit Training is assessed through internal assessment. You will be provided with a Learner Assessment Record which will document your progress through coursework and a practical assessment at the end of the course.

  Progression

Once qualified, you’ll have a detailed understanding of planning and delivering fun, safe and effective Circuit Training classes. This will allow you to expand your provision to your clients. Learners may also progress on to the YMCA Awards Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Practitioner). Many of our students have gone on to employment further afield for David Lloyd premier clubs, Steiner Cruise ships, Champneys and Warner Holidays.

This programme is studied as a one year top-up from a relevant foundation degree, where you will complete Year 3 only. Based at our main Cornwall College Newquay campus you will have the opportunity to study a number of different modules relating to the ocean environment in which you practise your sport, including research into issues arising from the environmental impacts of marine sports and contemporary issues relating to the practice and development of a variety of marine sports. Level 2 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne


If you love sport and fitness, this is the course for you! You will develop your skills and knowledge in the sports health and fitness sector. This is your first step to becoming a sports coach, PE teacher or fitness instructor! The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about both practical and theoretical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time in our on-campus sports hall, a fully equipped gym and 3G pitch. You’ll be looking at everything: strength & conditioning techniques, sporting skills and the beginnings of tactical awareness, along with teamwork and leadership. In addition, you will be carrying out your very own personal fitness plan as you progress through the course. In essence, you’ll be developing all of the essential skills you need to start your journey towards a career in sport, health and fitness. Cornwall College has a selection of college sports teams, which regularly train and compete at a participatory and competitive level. A large selection of enrichment activities are also available, including table tennis, badminton, recreational football, basketball and circuit training. We have excellent links with local employers and sports clubs, providing amazing work experience and volunteering opportunities. Many of our students have gone on to employment further afield or abroad. As a Level 2 course, this diploma is all about introducing you to everything from the theory behind how the body works, to the practical steps needed to plan and coach your very own sport/fitness session. FdSc Surf Science & Technology

Level 5 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne


During the programme you will study: the sport of surfing as well as surfing businesses; business planning relating to the surfing industry; event management; environmental science; human exercise science; principles of psychology and coaching; design and manufacture of surf boards; the environment and human impacts on it; the development of surfing culture and history; sport-related media and politics; the geographical and climatic influences on surfing. The programme is based at our main Cornwall College Newquay campus. This is an academic programme and although practical surfing is not part of the course, the location provides plenty of opportunities to surf on some of the best beaches in Europe. So, whilst a healthy interest in some aspect of surfing is helpful, you do not need to be an excellent surfer to apply. The programme benefits from very close links with many of the major players in the surfing world. You will have the chance to design and build your own surfboard, take surf coaching, first aid and beach lifeguard qualifications, review competitions, as well as working in an industry-related environment. There is the possibility of taking an optional field trip to the west coast of France and Spain to explore the implications of human and climatic influences on the environment. This trip normally lasts ten days, and it gives you the chance to carry out some fieldwork and learn more about beach topography, oceanography and the different aspects of tourism and business related to the surfing industry. During this trip you will experience first-hand some of the best surf locations in Europe. There will be a number of opportunities to engage with industry throughout the programme and also to complete a work placement in an area of your own interest. As Cornwall is the centre of the surfing industry within the UK, Cornwall College is lucky enough to have links with some of the top names from the industry. There are regular guest speakers and lecturers who help to further engage with you about the many different aspects of the surfing sector. Speakers in the past have included Rob Barber, Dave Reed, Tony Butt and Ester Spears. This course is also available with Science Gateway, perfect for you if you would like to study any of the science-based Foundation Degrees (FdSc) we offer, but don’t have the right qualifications or grades to do so.
