This course is perfect if you are a complete beginner or have limited welding knowledge. Ideal if you want to learn a new skill, if you are creative, if you want to repair your own car or even a garden gate.


On this course you will learn a basic understanding of the different Welding processes used in industry and at home. Gaining a basic understanding of Manual Metal ARC welding (stick) and Metal Arc Gas Shielded (MIG), covering Flat and H/V single weld beads, re-joining of runs, welding outside corner joints, Butt welds and horizontal/vertical fillet welds on 3-6mm thick plate. The MIG/Mags welding section will cover the setting-up of the machine (gas, volts and wire speed etc) for correct operation to deposit welds in the horizontal/vertical and Flat welding positions, material thickness 1-6mm.

You will require fire resistant overalls and steel toe capped boots/shoes for this course. Also due to Health and Safety guidelines we would recommend that you wear glasses instead of contact lenses if you require them.


This course runs on a Wednesday evening from 6.00pm to 8.00pm for 8 weeks.

This programme prepares you for a career in a variety of engineering disciplines and develops the concepts, knowledge, skills and techniques required for today’s competitive and dynamic engineering industry. The programme consists of core modules and a series of optional modules, allowing you to focus your learning in areas of interest. Modules of study in the fields of mechanical, electrical, design, production, marine and control engineering, are included to allow for a wide range of possible career goals. You will have a series of structured lectures, project-based practical activities and industrial visits to help inform and develop your learning. Standards Apprenticeship – Engineering Operations

Level 2 • Work-based • Cornwall College Camborne


This Level 2 apprenticeship is ideal if you want to start your journey to becoming a qualified engineer. The apprenticeship route provides an ideal foundation for a wide range of skills within the engineering field. You will learn a range of practical skills, be able to follow technical drawings and work carefully and methodically. The course is 75% practical workshop based with 25% classroom theory work. You will have to complete a range of practical assessments to a high standard alongside reports that detail what you have done and whether you met the required standard. All training is provided by ex-industry experts with many years within their field to guide you through your learning and assessment within the course. Units include: Health and safety Engineering environmental awareness Fabrication Welding CAD design Hand fitting Turning and Milling machining Once you have completed the two qualifications (Skills and Knowledge) you will progress to an End Point Assessment, where you will be assessed on your skills and knowledge over a range of tasks and an interview. We have award-winning partnerships with many world-class organisations in Cornwall, See career progression tab for a list of current apprentice locations. To ensure you gain all the skills needed for a career as an engineer, you will need to start your apprenticeship at Level 2. On successful completion you can go into employment or continue on to our Level 3 standards apprenticeship in Welding/fabrication, fitter or machinist pathways.

Level 4 • Part-time • Cornwall College Camborne


This programme is ideal if you have completed your A Levels and are looking to progress into the engineering sector, or you are working as an engineering technician and would like to develop your knowledge and skills in the engineering industry. The programme brings together the requirement for technicians to be well versed in engineering principles and also to develop specialist knowledge in an area of their choosing.
