As a qualified mechanic you could work in an amazingly diverse industry, whether servicing, repairing, working managing a fl­eet or as a mobile specialist, once qualified there are lots of career opportunities. Modern technology means you won’t just be working with sockets, wrenches and pliers to repair engines, with modern cars now requiring computer diagnostics for fault finding and repairs you will become familiar with the latest technology, repair techniques and testing.

We offer a range of professional qualifications and training that will allow you to become a qualified mechanic, whatever level you start at. The courses on this page show how you can study full-time to become a light vehicle specialist in general maintenance and repair. Level 1, 2 and 3 need to be achieved to be fully qualified.

This one-year course will provide you with the chance to become a fully qualified light vehicle technician.

  What You Will Learn

You will gain higher practical skills training in our state-of-the-art workshops and working garages and on completion you will be able to understand and diagnose faults on a range of systems, have the knowledge and experience to be able to supervise others and have some understanding of how to run your own business, or work to become a diagnostic technician.

Areas you will cover include: engine faults, transmission issues, steering and suspension, chassis rectification, and electrical and electronic diagnostic testing.

  Entry Requirements

GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 or above, plus a relevant Level 2 qualification or experience in the sector

  Work Experience

As part of your course you will be required to carry out Work Experience and/or an Industry Placement.

  Progression

Progress the workplace or meet your ambition of setting up your own business. You may also wish to do further specialist training in bodywork and painting or inspection and testing to broaden your expertise and develop your career.

This introductory course is the perfect starting point if you want a job working with cars but need to develop your literacy and numeracy skills before progressing onto some of our more advanced automotive courses. Heavy Goods Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Diploma

Level 3 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne, Cornwall College St Austell


Working with heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), buses and other large transport requires specialist skills and training. We offer a dedicated full-time programme so you can go on to work with heavy vehicles, trailers and lift trucks, refrigeration lorries or bus fleets. We offer a full-time initial preparation route (at Level 1 and 2 depending on your prior experience and qualifications) with a final Level 3 apprenticeship to take you to supervisory level employment in this sector, with companies as diverse as Volvo and Heathrow Airport. This one-year full-time programme will allow you to become fully qualified in the maintenance and repair of heavy vehicles. During the course you will grow your knowledge and understanding of the systems and diagnostic techniques of a wide range of heavy vehicles. Successful completion of the course will mean you are able to work in a supervisory role in the workplace, aware of best practice in health and safety and good housekeeping. You will also be fully conversant in all materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in this automotive environment.

The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time in our workshop, learning by doing as you work on a range of cars and vehicles.
