Adverse circumstances can have a negative impact on anyone's life, but children and young people are particularly vulnerable. They might face difficult circumstances such as the death or divorce of parents, domestic violence, or national and international disasters. These types of adverse childhood experiences can have an impact on their development and mental health, which may continue into adulthood and affect their life chances. This fully online course will give you the skills you need to support children and young people affected by adverse childhood experiences. You will gain insight into how to strengthen their resilience and empower them to overcome the challenges they face.

My time at Cornwall College has quite literally changed my life. Completing the access course has allowed me to progress onto university and fulfill my dream of becoming a midwife.

I chose Cornwall College as the hours for the access course suited my family commitments. After attending an open day, I was also impressed with the support available to students.

The support I have received from my lecturers, my tutor and fellow students has been amazing. After being out of education for 15 years the access course has given me the skills and confidence to progress onto university. The learning curve over the last 9 months has been incredible and I will be forever grateful to those that supported me.

Access courses are designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress onto Higher Education. This course is ideal if you want to re-direct your career into areas, amongst others, such as social work, teaching or health and social care management. This course would also be ideal for those wishing to take a social sciences subject specific degree such as sociology, psychology and criminology etc. This is a challenging course and it is expected that students will complete a minimum of 15 hours additional independent study each week. Students may access college facilities on the days that they are not taught with some evening study available. Please also be advised that most universities require work experience to complement your UCAS application. Dental Nursing Diploma

Level 3 • Part-time • Cornwall College St Austell


From a general check-up to root canal work, as a dental nurse you will be required to have a reassuring and caring nature as it will be your job to look after the patients. You will also need great communication and organisational skills as you will be responsible for looking after the equipment and maintaining high levels of cleanliness. Successful completion of the course will enable you to become a qualified dental nurse and register with the General Dental Council. New apprenticeship standards are being introduced to focus skills training more on specific career roles within industry. These government changes mean the apprenticeship skills development programme is written with employers ensuring you are much more work ready for a specific role by the time you complete your training. As part of your course you will be required to be employed in a trainee dental nurse position.Your employer will give you all the hands-on practical experience you need to become a fully qualified dental nurse. You will need great communication and organisational skills, plus a caring manner to succeed in this industry. You will be required to attend college on 1 day per week. Completion of this course will allow you to progress on to further studies at other universities such as: BSc Dental Therapy & Hygiene or BSc (Hons) Dental Therapy.

Basic Signing

No Qualification • Part-time • Cornwall College St Austell


Learn some basic signing with our communication specialist, Nicky Varney. Nicky uses sign in her daily support of learners, as a Higher Learning Support Practitioner, and is qualified to BSL Level 2. Nicky also uses other methods of communication in her work, such as Braille and Widget. This course will be delivered at Cornwall College St Austell campus, and will be offered on two other occasions this academic year, both in college, for those that prefer in person training, and once online to support others unable to travel.
