close up of model with eyes made up theatrically This course is aimed at those who already have experience within the make-up industry and would like to develop their skills as a Professional Make-up Artist for Film, Theatre and TV. It has been specifically designed to develop practical skills to an advanced level through a variety of techniques.

You will be shown will how to apply and master specialist make-up techniques and work with artificial hair for a broad range of creative and dynamic industries.

You will cover every aspect of advanced make-up techniques for film, television and stage alongside other media purposes. This comprehensive course covers basic hairdressing, media make-up, wigs and postiche, character make-up, prosthetics and special effects.

The course is for one year, approximately 3 days a week.

What you will learn

Students on this course also get to develop their work based skills; recognising the importance of professional practice. At this advanced level you will cover the units:

Apply Make-up
Provide Lash & Brow Treatments
Apply airbrush make-up to the face
Camouflage make-up
Fashion & Photographic Make-up
Media make-up
Style and fit postiche
Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps
Design and apply face and body art
Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques
Creative fantasy hair design for performers
Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
Client care and communication in the specialist make-up related industry

You will also be expected to take part in competition work, demonstrations from visiting guest speakers and work experience.

Our tutors are industry professionals and they will demonstrate the practical techniques as well as best practice so that you can be sure that you are equipped with the skills and know-how to perform these services independently.

Entry requirements

You will need a Level 2 hair & media make-up qualification and a real interest in the make-up industry. You should be enthusiastic to learn a variety of advanced practical skills and the associated knowledge, which will develop your employment opportunities within the make-up industry.

As with all media make-up professions, you will need to create the right impression with your clients and must therefore be professional, courteous and discreet. Excellent communication skills are essential.

This is an intensive, knowledge-based course and we do look for enthusiasm and motivation to succeed on the course.

Work experience

You are expected to find an external industrial work placement while on the course. This will help you gain valuable work experience to help you develop a career in this exciting industry.

Assessment

You will be assessed whilst providing treatments in the salons/studio. You will be required to provide models for some of these assessments. Assignments, written papers and online tests will also be used to test theoretical knowledge and understanding.

Progression

Afterwards, you may wish to progress on to the salon management qualification or use your new qualification to gain employment in industry. Career possibilities include employment in the media make-up and hairdressing industries with opportunities for self-employment. Examples could include working in theatre, TV or film (although more experience at higher Levels are beneficial for film and television).
