This qualification provides learners with an understanding of the knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in a school or college environment. The qualification covers elements including children and young people’s development, safeguarding their welfare and communication and professional relationships.

  What You Will Learn

Through a range of interesting topics including child development, health and safety, safeguarding, personal development, communication, equality and diversity and schools as organisations.

You will need to complete 11 mandatory units.

  Entry Requirements

To have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills at the level required to support pupils' learning. Relevant skills and attributes include: Experience of working in a school Interest and commitment to working with children and/or young people Ability to relate well to children, young people and adults Willing to reflect on your own practice, learn and apply that learning to the workplace

  Progression

Progress onto higher qualifications such as our Level 4 Advanced Practitioner in Schools and Colleges or into the workforce.

Studying at Cornwall College was an excellent experience. The staff at both campuses were outstanding and really went the extra mile to support the learning journey for all of us. The range of modules were excellent and up-to-date and highly relevant to my chosen profession.

After the course, I joined a SCITT programme and completed this alongside my PGCE to become a primary school teacher. I have now completed my NQT Induction year and am fully qualified. Since September 2017, I have been studying towards an MA Education as I want to develop professionally and academically.

I am a full-time teacher in a year 3/4 class in a primary school in North Cornwall and have a key focus in development strategies in Literacy. Working as a teacher is even more rewarding than I could have imagined, seeing those ‘lightbulb’ moments is such an amazing experience.

Completing my Degree with Cornwall College has provided opportunities and experiences that I could only have hoped for with another institution

Early Years Educator CACHE Diploma

This course is designed to meet the needs of motivated, enthusiastic people interested in a career working with children or who wish to progress on to university. This nationally recognised Level 3 course leads to the achievement of Early Years Educator status, recommended by the Department for Education (DfE) as the full and relevant qualification required to undertake such roles as working with children under 5 as a Keyworker in a Nursery or Early Years Foundation Stage setting or as a Teaching Assistant in a Reception class in Primary schools. It is a ‘gateway’ qualification for many other careers within the Children’s Workforce such as Portage Worker, Family Support Worker, SENCO or Children’s Health Support worker.  Those who wish to continue into Higher Education will gain UCAS points which will enable them to progress into careers such as Early Years or Primary Teacher, Social Worker, Speech & Language Therapist or Play Therapist among others. We have past students who are now in management and leadership roles working in a range of employment positions and provisions including Nursery, Pre School and Primary School settings throughout Devon and Cornwall. We aim to set high standards in our teaching in order to ensure that our students when they qualify are striving for outstanding practice in their work settings. You will examine a range of services, systems, working practices and policies relating to children, schools and families and will cover subject areas such as sociology, psychology, philosophy and education. The programme will prepare you for working with children and young people by integrating theory and practice in preparation for a rewarding career. The assessment opportunities embedded within the modules provide the ability for you to shape your own programme of study to meet your individual interests. The programme is offered either on a full-time basis over one year, or part-time over two years. This provides the choice for you to focus full-time on your studies or to continue to work and study by taking advantage of the flexibility of part-time provision. The degree provides the opportunity to not only up-skill to degree level, but also to develop your knowledge in areas of professional and personal interest.
