Standards Apprenticeship – Machinist

Standards Apprenticeship – Machinist Level 3 is ideal if you want to start your journey to becoming a qualified engineer. The apprenticeship route provides an ideal foundation for a wide range of skills within the engineering field.

Within the 4-year apprenticeship, you will start from a general engineering platform at the foundation phase (years 1 & 2), where you will learn a grounding in Engineering, with a mix of units. You will learn a range of practical skills, be able to follow technical drawings and work carefully and methodically. The course is 75% practical workshop based with 25% classroom theory work. You will have to complete a range of practical assessments to a high standard alongside reports that detail what you have done and whether you met the required standard.

You will then progress onto the development phase (Years 3 & 4) where you will hone your skills specific to your pathway and your job. Learning all the skills and knowledge required in greater depth and understanding that years 1 & 2. This phase is 50% theory and 50% practical. Completing units on a pass/merit/distinction basis. All training is provided by ex-industry experts with many years within their field to guide you through your learning and assessment within the course. Alongside this College-based qualification, you will complete an NVQ-style competence qualification. A Cornwall College assessor will walk you through the process of completing report write-ups of jobs you do at work.

Once you have completed the four qualifications (2 at Foundation and 2 at Development phases) you will progress to an End Point Assessment, where you will be assessed on your skills and knowledge in an interview.

Units on this apprenticeship include:
Machinists
Health and Safety
Engineering efficiency
Communications
Properties and applications of engineering materials
Hand fitting
Advanced Turning
Advanced Milling
MIG/MAG welding
CNC

We have award-winning partnerships with many world-class organisations in Cornwall, See career progression tab for a list of current apprentice locations.
