A career in painting and decorating can offer you a wide range of experiences if you are a practical person with creative flair. You may work as an independent sole trader or for a larger construction company decorating new builds or even on industrial jobs sandblasting and spray painting on a large scale.

This Level 2 apprenticeship continues your professional development in painting and decorating. Introducing more advanced and complex techniques such as creating specialist finishes and applying and creating colour.

You must complete both Level 1 and 2 qualifications to ensure your skills and technical ability are of a high enough standard to start a career in painting and decorating. To work in a construction or building site on new builds you will also need a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) accreditation that we can provide as part of the course.

This apprenticeship takes two years to complete, working while you earn and learn, by attending college one day per week. You will need to find a business that will employ you as an apprentice throughout your training.

  What You Will Learn

By the end of this course you will be able to:

• Manage health and safety best practice in the workplace
• Measure and calculating supplies needed for projects
• Prepare surfaces for decoration
• Use a range of paint systems and roller complex areas
• Apply papers to walls and ceilings
• Produce specialist finishes
• Effectively communicate with colleagues
• Create new colours and mix paints
• Erect and dismantle access equipment and platforms.

  Entry Requirements

GCSE English and maths at grade 3 or above and the Level 1 qualification. If you choose the apprenticeship route, you will need to be employed as an apprentice throughout your training.


You will be assessed by a combination of theory, practical demonstrations and practical tests.

City and Guilds Diploma in gas engineering

If you are a practical person, who enjoys a challenge, problem solving and making a real difference in people’s lives, then a career as a gas engineer could well be the path for you. You will spend time learning gas theory here with us at Cornwall College covering all aspects from natural gas combustion to gas appliance installation. We build a good understanding of the science and meaning behind gas appliances and how they work and test our understanding by getting hands on in the work shop and of course, you’ll be working with qualified engineers, meeting the required criteria, in the workplace. To undertake this course no prior knowledge of plumbing or gas is required however it would be an advantage if you have some experience. All subjects will be covered whilst attending the course, however some homework and additional study will be required in your own time. We have built you a strong online moodle page full of information, power points, handouts, work sheets and mock papers to help you revise at your own pace.. Moodle is a great place to pick up required resources on the days that you are not attending college. With determination and a keen spirit, the hard work will pay off in only 2 years when you will achieve a City & Guilds level 3 Diploma in Gas Engineering.

Electrical Installation Diploma

Do you like a challenge? Are you a practical, hand-on problem solver? If the answer is ‘yes’ to these questions then a fulfilling career in the electrical industry may be for you and the Level 1 in Electrical Installation is the perfect first step to take! You will spend time learning electrical theories in the classroom and then put these into practise in our extensive and dedicated electrical workshop. Cornwall College is proud of its recently created Mezzanine practical workspace, which houses well-stocked working bays featuring industry standard kit for you to put your newfound skills into practise. As a Level 1 student, you will gain a solid understanding of many aspects of the electrical industry, including wiring circuits, health and safety, installation methods, wiring systems, basic testing, renewables and much more. Our team of lecturer’s and course managers are friendly, approachable and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from a wide variety of electrical backgrounds. They will guide and support you on your journey making sure that you get the most out of the course. The Level 1 diploma is all about introducing you to the electrical industry and developing your essential skills. Successful completion of the course can see you move onto our full time Level 2 course to further develop your skills or perhaps an apprenticeship is more your style and is a great alternative.
