The United Nations has proclaimed 2021-2030 to be the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Higher Education must now produce science graduates capable of realising the ambitious goals of this framework. These graduates must be able to grasp the global scope and timeliness of the issues at hand, to undertake the science required that will provide answers to questions as they arise, then convey these faithfully and articulately to whichever audience needs to hear them.

You will be starting a journey on a marine programme like no other.

To our knowledge, no other degree programme in the UK has embedded the Ocean Literacy programme promoted by UNESCO to this extent. We can find no other course that has based a first-year module around this programme by using the seven ocean literacy principles as Assessed Learning Outcomes.

You will be embarking on a programme of study which embeds science communication. In each year, there is a specific module where science communication and education/interpretation/outreach are taught, and it forms part of the assessment. In addition, other modules have learning outcomes that make the dissemination of marine scientific knowledge a core attribute.

In your second-year subjects you will engage with a suite of three 20-credit modules that are heavily active and field-based. You will collect data, maintain equipment and publish recordings in an approach that is designed to be as practical as possible, with repeated attempts at activities that then embed them with your applied skillset. These modules cover biological, chemical and physical oceanography, thereby equipping you with skillset to become technicians in these fields, or well prepared to gain higher level qualifications to enable research-related careers.

You will be undertaking a module that cultivates your sense of entrepreneurship. This module teaches you the past achievements in marine resource use, allows you to develop your GIS skills in mapping the present marine resource use from a marine spatial planning perspective and then explore new products from marine resources – including learning about how these could be marketed.

You will be based in a fantastic rural campus in the heart of Newquay, with a small, family feel. The staff are research active and bring that expertise to the class. We often encourage students who write exceptional and publishable project reports to co-write their work for scientific publication, with them as the lead author.

You will be 10-30 minutes’ walk from a range of north Cornish coast habitats, a dive school with a range of dive courses on offer, a local and very active marine conservation group, a research-equipped vessel for coastal work and you will be 45 minutes’ drive from an additional range of south Cornish coast habitats. You will be four hours’ travel from the world-famous biodiversity hotspot of the Isles of Scilly, a location for which a residential fieldtrip could be based. There are a number of marine protected areas on your doorstep in which to learn your subject area, including one on your doorstep – Newquay and the Gannel Marine Conservation Zone.

Finally, we have strong links with local conservation and marine organisations to develop your work-related experience, which is a very strong thread through the programme.

  Entry Requirements

64 UCAS Points in scientific subjects at Level 3; Cs/4-5s at GCSE in English, Maths and Science. If not in English and Maths then Level 2 Functional Skills in Literacy and Numeracy.

If you are passionate about surfing and want to pursue a career in the surf industry, then this is the course for you. FdSc Surf Science is delivered in one of the most beautiful and appropriate locations in the UK, Newquay, in the stunning county of Cornwall where there are countless surfing beaches, to suit all levels and styles, all on your doorstep. Newquay is where surf culture started and blossomed in the UK and has moulded Newquay into the self-proclaimed surf capital of the UK. Newquay and the South-West is where most of the surf industry has developed and continues to thrive, providing many opportunities for students to connect and engage with the big players within the industry. This is an academic programme and although practical surfing is not part of the course, the surfer friendly location provides plenty of opportunities to surf on some of the best beaches in Europe. So, whilst a healthy interest in some aspect of surfing is helpful, you do not need to be an excellent surfer to apply. You will learn through practical examples, demonstrations and active practice in workshops, lectures, guest lectures, work placements and optional field trips. There will be several opportunities to engage with industry professionals throughout the programme and to complete a work placement in an area of your own interest. There are regular guest speakers and lecturers who help to further engage with you about the many different aspects of the surfing sector. Speakers in the past have included Rob Barber, Dave Reed, Tony Butt and Ester Spears. During the first year of FdSC Surf Science, you will explore the basic key areas of Culture of Surf and Sport, Surf Practice and Physical and Geographical Influences on Surfing. This programme also gives you an introduction to Media and Events, Scientific Techniques and Production Methods and Materials. The first year will also provide you with the opportunity to start developing your professional skillset in Key Professional Skills module. In your final year, you’ll expand your understandings of Ecology and Management of the Coastal Environment, Sociological and Psychological Perspectives of Surfing, Scientific Aspects of Health, Fitness and Nutrition in Sport and Surf Businesses. In addition, you will have allocated time to complete your Application of CAD in the Surf Industry and Individual Research Project module. This course not only covers underpinning knowledge in sports science, the environment, the surf industry, media and events and culture. You will also get an opportunity to shape your own, personal surfboard from concept through to completion, with a world-renowned surfer and shaper, surf the breaks of Northern Spain and Southern France on the annual Basque Country fieldtrip, where you will gain world recognised ‘tickets’ in coaching, judging and lifesaving which will enhance your chances of employment. The course is taught by passionate, authentic lecturers who contextualise modular content to the sport, recreation and industry of surfing all with a love for preserving the environment in which they work and play. In short, this is a unique course and unlike any other in the UK and Europe, which allows you to take your surf passion one step further. With a FdSC Degree in Surf Science you'll be well prepared for roles in the surfing field. FdSc Zoology with Ecology and Conservation

Globally we are thinking more than ever about our natural world, the world has moved on from the traditional thinking of zoology, where habitats and species exist in almost isolated units, to more progressive thinking of ecosystems operating with both animal and habitat reliant on the other. This course is designed for those students that want to progress into employment within ecology and conservation - whether it is working as an ecologist on conservation programmes in the UK or abroad or working in Ecological Consultancy. The first stage sets students with the basics in ecological theory, survey techniques, statistics and scientific report writing. Stage two allows the students to follow one of two pathways, either specialising more on UK-based conservation and ecology or taking a more global conservation focus, with the optional modules of One Plan Conservation and Global Conservation Issues.

MSc Land And Ecological Restoration

Level 7 • Full-time • Cornwall College Newquay


Human activities are responsible for historical and ongoing damage to our planet and the services it performs for us. As the human population grows, so does the imperative not just to mitigate against further deterioration but to actively seek to restore and recover damaged and destroyed habitats to achieve environmental growth. MSc Land and Ecological Restoration aims to develop a holistic understanding of the process of restoring degraded sites and ecosystems. You will learn how to identify restoration priorities, engage stakeholders, plan, implement and monitor programmes of restoration, evaluate the success of activities, and plan aftercare. The course places a particular emphasis on ecological restoration as ‘the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed.’ You will develop a thorough understanding of the theoretical framework underpinning practical techniques together with the project management and employability competencies necessary to lead and contribute to restoration activities in the UK and abroad. The course is taught at Cornwall’s iconic Eden Project – a world-famous example of the successful restoration of post-industrial land, located within an area of active China clay extraction in the English county with the greatest proportion of ‘derelict’ land. You will have access to unique facilities at Eden – including Europe’s largest indoor rainforest, constructed soils, laboratories, teaching spaces, IT suite and learning centre and you will benefit from access to facilities at other Cornwall College campuses and at University of Plymouth. There is a large emphasis on fieldwork with visits to local restoration sites varying in scale from small nature reserves, through ongoing restoration by companies and government agencies, to large scale EU funded infrastructure projects that have transformed communities. During the course and subject to any travel restrictions you will also have the unique opportunity to visit a restoration project abroad. Working with our international partners and the global professional body for ecological restoration, you will meet local practitioners and academics, and contribute to ecological surveys and practical restoration work. With case studies and live employer briefs you will have ample opportunity to apply your learning and on graduation be well placed to progress to PhD research or enter an international labour market. Key principles and standards developed by professional bodies including the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) and Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) are embedded in the programme to prepare you for professional recognition.
