This skills-based programme meets the requirements of one of the fastest growing, dynamic and entrepreneurial sectors in the creative industries. Providing practical specialist knowledge to pursue a career in the game industry in paths such as an animation, level design, 3D modelling or concept art etc. Core artistic and technical skills will be developed to enable creation and building of games and content for a variety of platforms.

You will gain an understanding of the broad areas of games development, ludology, VR, concept work, 3D modelling and animation, level creation, character design, motion capture, history, contextual and social issues, together with an overview of the more technical and creative aspects of the games design pipeline.

Studies include formal lectures, practical workshops, trips to EGX Rezzed (London) and industry based assignments, exploring numerous aspects of digital gaming within a combined creative and technical framework; real-world tasks; creating real products through competitions, live client briefs and for the college’s own games design company; establishing a strong portfolio; web presence and showreel towards future employment. The experience is relevant and realistic.

  Entry Requirements

48 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 32 points must be at A2-level) or relevant level 3 qualification, ie BTEC National Diploma / BTEC Extended Diploma - PPP Grades required (specific unit grades may be requested). Access to HE Diplomas in a relevant subject - 45 credits at level 3 (specific unit grades may be requested). Plus GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 or above in English Language and Mathematics: alternatives at Level 2 may be considered. Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply. A show reel or portfolio of work will also be required at interview.

  Assessment

Assessment includes coursework, portfolios, pitches and digital work. Communicating concepts through visuals, prototypes, 3D/2D game assets, documentation and the ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems is central.
You will also have access to industry standard software and hardware such as Autodesk (3D Studio Max, Maya, Mudbox etc), UE4, Oculus Rifts and a wide range of audio visual equipment.

This course is perfect for students who like to study in a practical, hands-on way. You will explore a wide range of materials, processes and technical skills, as well as developing good study skills, communication skills, employability skills and self-confidence. The qualification is structured to provide time for gallery visits, collaborative projects and work experience, alongside regular sketchbook work, contextual studies, specialist workshops and portfolio building. The timetable also allows you to study for your Maths and English GCSE’s should you need to. The course begins with fun projects and a variety of skills workshops that are taught to the whole group. Over time you will be able to steer projects to be themed to your own interests or chosen art or design specialism. You will soon become a more independent learner who is able to come up with original ideas, write your own project proposals, develop sketchbook pages and create finished pieces that you are proud of. If you choose to study at our St Austell campus you will work as part of The Creative and Digital Academy, collaborating on a wide range of projects, performances and exhibitions with fellow creativity. Our vibrant and diverse spaces mean you’ll be engaging with musicians, dancers, gamers, filmmakers and actors, all working together to grow the creative landscape in Cornwall. If you choose to study at our Camborne campus you will be based in our bright and spacious art studio. Painting a Riverbank in Watercolour or Acrylic Beginners Workshop

On this workshop you will learn the basic techniques of drawing and watercolour or acrylic painting. You will gain an understanding of composition and use of colour so you can develop your own style within these exiting mediums. All will improve with friendly individual tuition.
