Course information

Hair and Barbering Student A progression route for Level 2 hairdressers wanting to gain employment within the hairdressing industry. This course is aimed at learners wishing to further their existing hairdressing skills in advanced techniques. You will be expected to attend College for two/three days a week and will be required to work to high professional standards.

A part-time course is also available.

You will train in one of our industry standard salons, work in a realistic environment and use the latest equipment, machinery and products within the industry. When you are confident enough and have practiced the techniques to a level 3 standard, you will be able to provide services to paying clients.

Alongside the training, you will be required to complete work related experience within the industry to enrich your programme of study and gain employability skills. You are also required to complete course work, practice and research in your own time towards completion of this qualification.

You will need to complete external work experience for one day a week.

Students on this course also get to develop their work based skills; recognising the importance of professional practice. You will learn how to cut women’s and men’s hair using a variety of advanced techniques, creatively colour and lighten hair, creatively style and dress hair, colour correction services and be involved with induction, consultation, treatment care and advice, as well as tailoring aftercare advice to individual clients.

Our tutors are industry professionals and they will demonstrate the practical techniques as well as best practice so that you can be sure that you are equipped with the skills and know-how to perform these services independently.

Practical skills are developed on training heads - once a level of competence is reached you will work on paying clients.

You will need a Level 2 hairdressing qualification and a real interest in the hairdressing industry. You should be enthusiastic to learn a variety of advanced practical skills and the associated knowledge, which will develop your employment opportunities within the hairdressing industry.

As with all hairdressing professions, you will need to create the right impression with your clients and must therefore be professional and courteous. Excellent communication skills are essential.

You are expected to find an external industrial work placement while on the course. This will help you gain valuable work experience to help you develop a career in this exciting industry.

Theory is delivered for each unit and in house exams are set, however emphasis is placed on practical learning. Paying clients are to be used for practical assessment. Alongside the theory you will produce a portfolio of your work which will be verified and should include assessment books, projects, and theoretical work

Afterwards, you may wish to progress on to the salon management qualification or use your new qualification to gain employment in industry. Opportunities exist in the UK as well as overseas for this fast growing industry. You may move into management or become a trainer, lecturer or a company field technician.
