If you are interested in a career in hairdressing, then this course will equip you with the latest knowledge and experience needed to work within this industry.

The purpose of this qualification is to develop your practical skills to a high level of occupational ability, this will enable you to perform your own hairdressing services.

As well as the practical knowledge that you will gain from working on the job, our team of industry trained professionals will guide you through the theory, offering their advice and demonstrating techniques.

Students on this course will also have the opportunity to work on reception, enhancing their work-based skills in customer service, product promotion and retail sales.

  What You Will Learn

You will be hands-on from the first week, learning in purpose-built salons. All aspects of hairdressing will be covered, including:

cutting and styling
setting and dressing
colouring and lightening
advising clients and creating styles

  Entry Requirements

A minimum of three GCSEs at grades A* - C (ideally in English and mathematics) We recognise that applicants without these qualifications can often offer a high level of competence as well as life experience and therefore consider all applications on their merits alongside their qualifications. If you are unsure as to whether or not you meet the requirements, please call the department and ask to speak to the course manager who will be happy to discuss it with you.

  Work Experience

As part of your course you may be required to carry out Work Experience and/or an Industry Placement.

  Assessment

Practical work will be assessed in the commercial salon.

  Progression

Cornwall College offers the complete pathway in Hairdressing and you could take your qualifications further by progressing on to the hairdressing or barbering diploma level 3.

Past students have gone on to managing their own business, travel on cruise liners or to teaching roles.

If you love promoting the holistic health and wellbeing of others, this is the course for you. This is a substantial vocational qualification that will prepare you for a career as a reflexologist. The course encourages practical learning where you will spend time in our treatment rooms working on clients, learning as you go and perfecting your skills in a supportive and knowledgeable environment. On completion you will be able to work in industry within a healthcare setting, for yourself, within a spa, salon or wellbeing centre. This course is made up of four units: Principals and Practice of Complementary Therapies - The aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge and understanding of the history and influences on the complementary therapy sector Business Practice for Complementary Therapies - The aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge, understanding and practical skills in researching, planning, maintaining and marketing a business in the complementary therapy industry. You will also learn to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues. Anatomy and physiology for Complementary Therapies - The aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology. Provide Reflexology for Complementary Therapies – the aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to carry out reflexology using a range of techniques. You will also develop knowledge of reading of the feet. These skills combined will give you the enthusiasm to work in a rapidly growing industry, for yourself or in a health care setting. During your time with us at college we will hopefully be able to take you into industry so you can see and experience for yourself different career options.
