As a hairdresser your job is to make people look amazing! From cutting and colouring to styling and consulting with your clients, as an apprentice you will be learning how to do all of these things while at the same time building up a rapport with clients and showing off your lively personality. The great thing about being an apprentice is that you will also be earning money at the same time!

Our courses will put you on the road to a great future; we have developed our qualifications in partnership with industry professionals to ensure the knowledge you gain is not only relevant and current, but will set you apart in the workplace. Throughout your studies you will learn by completing practical activities and assessments based on professional real-life scenarios in our Koko commercial training salons. You’ll get the chance to take part in competitions, fashion shows and get some masterclass insights from visiting professionals.

As part of this apprenticeship you will develop your skills in purpose-built salons which are open to the public. You will attend lectures in college one day per week while the remainder of the week is spent in the workplace.

You will put together a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent in the tasks you do every day, while receiving support from experienced Cornwall College tutors.

  What You Will Learn

Having mastered the basics of hairdressing in your Level 2 apprenticeship, you will now move on to the more advanced skills of fashion-led cutting techniques and alternative colour and correction techniques.

  Entry Requirements

A Hairdressing Level 2 qualification.

  Assessment

Assessments will be based on professional real-life scenarios in our Koko commercial training salons.

  Progression

Further study on our Hair & Beauty Management Diploma Level 4 or employment as a self-employed hairdresser or as a senior hairdresser in a salon.

I was very nervous and excited to start college. I was living in Looe and nobody that I knew from my school was going to do the course that I was going to do, so yeah, I had first day feels, but it was great. I made friends really quickly and like everyone says it goes really fast, so enjoy it. I loved my hairdressing course and getting really hands on. Before I started college I spent the summer in a salon, just as an assistant, soaking everything up and watching lots. I also practiced things on my friends and family, even if it was just blow drying. I have very curly hair so I really enjoyed trying new things out on my own hair too. There are so many options with hairdressing, it’s really limitless.

I now have my own salon in South London called Bleach. I also do a lot of freelance work, which I have been doing for about 10 years now working in TV, music videos, touring with musicians and artists on their tours, lots of live TV and photo shoots and things like that. I have also been able to travel, all things I never even imagined I would be able to do, so your possibilities are endless.

If the freelance side of things is what you would like to get into be very well rounded. I think it’s played well for me that I can do everything from cutting, colouring and extensions down to perming and shampoo and sets. When I was at college I was like; “oh another perm!”, but all of those things really shape everything that you end up being able to do. They give you so many skills that you might think at the time you’re not going to need but you really will want them! Practice as much as possible and play around, your friends will get tired of having their hair done.

If you are already qualified to a level 2 standard and looking to upgrade your qualification, then this course will help you to progress in your career as a barber. Not only will you develop your existing skills but you will also learn how to design and create a range of facial hair shapes and provide shaving services. Our courses will put you on the road to a great future; we have developed our qualifications in partnership with industry professionals to ensure that the knowledge you gain is not only relevant and current, but will set you apart in the workplace. You’ll also get the chance to get some masterclass insights from visiting professionals. You can expect to be hands-on from the first week. Learning in purpose-built salons, you will be training in a dynamic and commercial environment. In addition to the main qualification you will be expected to attend a work placement in a barbers to gain experience and knowledge of employability skills and expectations of being a part of a team in this industry.

Beauty Therapy

Level 3 • Full-time • Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy department


If you are already qualified to a level 2 standard and are looking to improve upon your qualification, either as a full time or part time student, this course will help you to progress in your career in beauty therapy. You may also be looking to demonstrate that you have the skills necessary to offer treatments at a more advanced level. Not only will you develop existing skills but you will also train in the more specialist areas such as electrotherapy and microdermabrasion. If you don’t currently have the skills or experience required to undertake this Level 3 course we also offer Beauty Therapy Level 2, which upon completion will allow you to progress to Level 3. You can expect to train in one of our industry standard salons, work in a realistic environment and use the latest equipment, machinery and products. When you are confident enough and have practiced the techniques to a level 3 standard, you will be able to provide treatments to paying customers.

Lash Lift Workshop

Professional Qualification • Part-time • Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy department


Professional one day lash lifting workshop. You will learn about the new products and techniques used which make eyelashes appear longer, thicker and curlier. You will learn about and complete practical work and assessment to achieve the safe application of lash lifting.
