This advanced qualification will introduce you to the complete process of furniture design and production, from researching the history of furniture design to the making of your own designs into finished practical pieces. Often you will get the chance to work on live commissions with clients that will give you an invaluable insight into the commercial world of furniture design and making.

If you have a creative soul with practical ability, a course in furniture making may be an ideal route to a rewarding career. Furniture design is a specialised field where function and fashion collide. Furniture has evolved and changed with the times, some styles have remained constant throughout the years, while others have drastically changed or become obsolete.

We offer two ways to train in furniture design and making, either full-time at college or part-time as an apprentice. You may wish to start full-time and build your skills and confidence before moving on to an apprenticeship. Whatever your prior knowledge or experience, we can offer you a starting point on the road to a creative and rewarding career.

  What You Will Learn

The majority of your time will be spent in our workshops, perfecting your craft, with assignments and projects making up your assessment to gain the qualification. Essential skills developed, both traditional and new and will include:

• Hand tool skills
• Wood machining
• Joint structure, strength & finishing
• Understanding timber types
• Technical drawing

  Entry Requirements

GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above plus a relevant Level 2 qualification such as the Furniture Making Diploma Level 2. An employer willing to take you on as an apprentice.

  Assessment

You will be assessed through both projects and assignments.

  Progression

University study such as our FdA Art & Design Practice with possible progression on to our BA (Hons) Art & Design Practice (top-up degree).

A specialist furniture design qualification at other universities.

A wide variety of careers including designing, manufacturing and installation.

Painting & Decorating Diploma

This Level 1 one-year introductory course will introduce you to the basics of painting and decorating and start to help you hone your practical craft skills. A career in painting and decorating can offer you a wide range of experiences if you are a practical person with creative flair. You may work as an independent sole trader or for a larger construction company decorating new builds or even on industrial jobs sandblasting and spray painting on a large scale. You must complete both Level 1 and 2 qualifications to ensure your skills and technical ability are of a high enough standard to start a career in painting and decorating. Basic Plumbing Studies

Level 1 • Full-time • Construction department


This is a one-year Level 1 introductory course to plumbing, teaching you the essential health & safety practices you will need to work in a trade profession. Often called upon in an emergency, if you can fix a leaking pipe, mend a broken toilet, or repair a central heating system, you will be hailed a hero. An experienced plumber should have the ability to work in a variety of different environments and during your time with us we will teach you the practical, hands-on skills and industry legislation to enable you to do this, either as an employee or running your own business. We offer both full-time study and apprenticeship options for you to train to be a professional plumber. We offer this Level 1 introductory year if you do not have the required grades to start at Level 2.

Picture Framing (DIY) Workshop

No Qualification • Part-time • Construction department


This workshop will show you how to frame well on a budget. All aspects of the basic framing of paintings, photos etc will be covered. Learn about mount cards, mouldings, conservation, decorative finishes, box frames and lots more. Everyone can try their hand at mitre and bevel mount cutting and information of local sources of materials and tools will be provided. Please bring a pad and pen to make notes and any art work, frames or tools you may wish to discuss or need advice on. We won't have time to frame individual pictures, but you are invited to bring a small size image (postcard, photo or original artwork) that you can bevel mount. Plenty of practice card will be available, but you may wish to bring your own mountcard, or buy a piece from the tutor (£2.00 per sheet). We suggest that you also bring a packed lunch and any other refreshments you may require. This workshop runs on a Saturday from 10.00am to 3.00pm for 1 day.
