Foundation Learning Skills Pathway: Skills Towards Vocational Studies

Foundation learning students gaining practical skills and experience The FL Skills Pathway develops and prepares you for further studies or employment, through a blend of practical and classroom-based learning.

You will have the opportunity to explore a range of vocational options: utilising cross-college departments to gain an insight in to different areas and develop your skills through internal employment based experiences. The invaluable opportunity for work placements can also form a part of your learning.

This Pathway is offered at different campuses. The vocational options on offer are specific to the campus you choose to study at, where you will benefit from being taught be a range of highly-skilled professionals.

Our vision is to support you to be INDEPENDENT, CONFIDENT AND RESILIENT so that you are well-prepared to engage with the wider community. The Skills Towards Vocational Studies course will give you a range of opportunities and experiences to inform your future steps and assist with your progression.

What you will learn

At Bicton College why not try out agriculture, animal care, equine studies, countryside, construction or horticulture? You could learn about; animal health and feeding, have a go at driving a tractor, put up a post and rail fence, or grow vegetables used in our cafe. Running alongside your vocational studies will be employability skills, English and mathematics helping you to succeed in your chosen pathway. We also offer a wide range of life skills learnt while helping to run our E3 café

Entry requirements

Entry Level 3 English and maths.

Assessment

Assessment will be ongoing throughout the academic year and could be practical, written or oral. Many of our assessments are available ‘on demand’ and you will be prepared by specialist teachers for these in order to support your achievement.

On successful achievement you will receive a City and Guilds Skills for working life entry 2 or 3 qualification and a Functional Skills in English and mathematics at a level appropriate to you.

Progression

On successful completion of this course you may wish to progress to other Pathways within Foundation Learning such as: Works or Vocational. You may feel ready to progress to a higher level course within the wider college or an apprenticeship or the world of work. We will work with you to help you achieve to your full potential.

Bicton College is based in East Devon, near Exeter, and set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just two miles from the Jurassic Coast. The historic Georgian mansion, commercial farm, animal husbandry school, modern veterinary nursing building, world-class engineering and heavy plant machinery workshop, walled garden and arboretum are all set in over 200 hectares of historic parkland.
