This course enables study to take place whilst in the workplace as a member of staff or volunteer.

On completion it will provide you with a Level 2 qualification in working with children and young people from the age of 0 to 6.11 years in a supporting role.

  What You Will Learn

You will cover a range of interesting topics including:

Child development
Play
Health and safety
Safeguarding
Creativity and personal development.

  Entry Requirements

The ability to cope with the knowledge requirements of the course at Level 2 and the opportunity to generate evidence of competence in the workplace with good level of literacy and numeracy. Your work placement needs to be within settings for children and young people.

Clare studied the FdA Early Childhood Studies and the BSc Health, Community and Social Sciences. She chose to study at Saltash as the course fitted in well around her work commitments and childcare needs. She enjoyed the opportunities that occurred during her time at the college.

" I managed to gain a Level 3 Paediatric First Aid certificate and attended conferences that I would otherwise not be privy to. I had the opportunity to fundraise for Childrens Hospice Southwest as part of a module and was privileged enough to visit Little Harbour, a truly humbling experience.

I went into employment as the Charity Coordinator and Youth Worker for TICTAC Liskeard. The setting is within Liskeard School and Community College grounds and I love that I have a broad range of experience with children and young people and that I am able to apply the knowledge achieved throughout my studies."

British Sign Language Level 1 Award

This Level 1 Award is designed to teach learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. They will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL. The specification has been designed using the UK Occupational Language Standards 2010 at Level 1. Level 1 Award in British Sign Language is suitable for those who: * want to learn basic language skills to communicate simple conversations with Deaf people * want to learn new language skills as part of a programme of study * want to progress to more advanced study and/or employment using BSL in the future * are studying for personal development * are parents, family, friends or colleagues of Deaf people. This is an evening course and normally runs from 6.00pm to 8.00pm for 32 weeks.
