If you love sport and fitness, this is the course for you! You will develop your skills and knowledge in the sports health and fitness sector. This is your first step to becoming a sports coach, PE teacher or fitness instructor!

The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about both practical and theoretical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time in our on-campus sports hall, a fully equipped gym and 3G pitch.

You’ll be looking at everything: strength & conditioning techniques, sporting skills and the beginnings of tactical awareness, along with teamwork and leadership. In addition, you will be carrying out your very own personal fitness plan as you progress through the course. In essence, you’ll be developing all of the essential skills you need to start your journey towards a career in sport, health and fitness.

Cornwall College has a selection of college sports teams, which regularly train and compete at a participatory and competitive level. A large selection of enrichment activities are also available, including table tennis, badminton, recreational football, basketball and circuit training.

We have excellent links with local employers and sports clubs, providing amazing work experience and volunteering opportunities. Many of our students have gone on to employment further afield or abroad.

As a Level 2 course, this diploma is all about introducing you to everything from the theory behind how the body works, to the practical steps needed to plan and coach your very own sport/fitness session. Our highly-skilled and motivated staff have a wealth of knowledge and experience in sport, health and fitness. They are there to give you the very best start to your career.

  What You Will Learn

This one-year introduction will provide the foundation knowledge of anatomy and physiology, you will learn about the principles of training and how to perform practically to achieve sporting excellence. By gaining an introduction to sports coaching, you will be prepared for the more specialised tactical awareness, sporting skills, awareness of healthy exercise and nutrition moving onto further qualifications.

  Entry Requirements

A minimum of three GCSEs at grade D (3) (to include English and PE/maths desirable) or you will have successfully completed a relevant Level 1 programme including English Functional Skills Level 1.

  Work Experience

The learning is supplemented with engagement with industry specialists as you will complete a mandatory work experience as part of your level 2 programme.

  Assessment

You will be assessed through written assignments, professional discussions, group work, practical assessments and presentations.

  Progression

Once you’ve finished the Level 2 course, you’ll have a real understanding of the foundations to sports coaching including health and fitness; and be ready to move on to the more advanced Level 2 and 3 courses. We also offer accredited, industry standard YMCA courses so this might also be an option to consider.

I originally enrolled on the Level 2 course purely to gain the qualification to become a reputable health and fitness journalist (after graduating with a journalism degree). But the course was so interesting, informative and fun that I couldn't resist staying on to complete the Level 3! I didn't even want to leave after that!

The qualifications enabled me to spend a few years working as a personal trainer and gym instructor alongside my writing work. And I know for certain that the knowledge and experience I gained from both the courses and my time spent working as a trainer has enabled me to write content at a much higher standard. It's also helped when interviewing high-level fitness professionals for articles as I can actually understand what they're talking about, which has given me a distinct advantage when pitching articles within the fitness industry. The knowledge has also improved my own training, so it's a win-win!

If fast, competitive, small-sided and skilful football is your thing, then you might be ready for 5-a-side. 5-a-side can be a great way of getting an intense ‘after work’ work-out with a bunch of friends; and despite the official name, it’s often played by four or seven players on each side, so however many participants there are, you can still get involved.
