This qualification enables learners to develop the foundation knowledge and skills required for employment, apprenticeships or further study to support career progression. It allows learners to experience a range of vocational areas such as making and finishing furniture; making soft furnishings or upholstery; using portable power tools; working with and machining wood and fitting interiors such as kitchens, bathrooms and offices. This experience enables learners to make informed choices about the specific areas of the industry they would wish to further develop as they pursue career aspirations.

  What You Will Learn

The first thing you will be introduced to is the basic skills in furniture making by hand. The skills covered by the unit include: preparing materials, marking out and cutting components using equipment, tools and materials. The knowledge acquired by yourself will enable you to understand and explain the basic processes involved of furniture making by hand. The introduction to safe working practices. This is a practical unit that gives you the opportunity to experiment with different types of wood, tools and materials. You will learn about different tools and equipment they will come across in the furniture and furnishing industry. You will know the importance of maintaining tools and equipment as well as looking at safe working practice when using tools and equipment. Knowledge and practical skills to both produce and read a range drawings, drawing orthographic, oblique and isometric drawings using a range of drawing equipment. You will produce cutting lists from technical drawings. You will carry out workshop geometry.

You will be introduced to the materials found in upholstery, woodwork and spray finishing workshops. It equips learners with basic knowledge of each of the material characteristics and they will be able to identify material types and recognise defects. The unit also introduces safe working practices and safe waste disposal.

Also knowing the best working practice and the legal responsibilities they have in the workplace. You will develop understanding of hazards and how to reduce risks in the workplace. You will understand how to evaluate the severity of risks. Also an understanding of environmental impacts of the timber trade and endangered timbers.

Furniture Design & Making Diploma

Level 3 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne


This course can change your earning potential and your ability to find work anywhere in the world. The question is what do you want to do? This course will enable you to fit out very high specification interiors in cars, motorhomes, super Yachts, planes or design and fit kitchens, offices, shops or set up your own furniture making business. The course is delivered here at the Camborne campus within the dedicated furniture suite where we have a large maker’s workshop, a design room, a power tool room and a finishing room as well as access to the wood machine/ joinery workshop. Within the workshops you will have practical access to equipment and staff that will enable you to progress your design to completion. You will have time to learn techniques that you can further develop. We are the only furniture provider in Cornwall and one of only a few furniture apprenticeship courses in the UK. We expect our learners to work to very high standards and this is reflected in the fact that one of our learners won Gold at the National World skills UK competition and has recently picked up the apprentice of the year for the Cornwall College Group.
