If you’ve ever had a fascination for how things are made, or improving the way something works, then a career in engineering could be for you. This course is your first introduction to the world of engineering, where you’ll develop the essential skills and discover the different opportunities that a hi-tech career can offer. The engineering programme at Level 1 is best suited if you are considering a career in Engineering. The course will provide you with the essential core skills required as an engineer. You will gain exposure to a real life engineering workshop and undertake practical assessments using relevant industry equipment and technology. You will also learn how to work within a team and develop on your literacy and numeracy skills.

You will be using traditional engineering equipment commonly found in many engineering and manufacturing employers in Cornwall.

  What You Will Learn

The engineering programme at Level 1 is best suited if you are considering a career in Engineering. The course will provide you with the essential skills required as an engineer. You will gain exposure to a real life-engineering workshop and undertake practical assessments using relevant industry equipment and technology. You will also learn how to work within a team and develop your maths and English skills.

  Entry Requirements

You will need Maths and English plus two other GCSEs at Level 3

  Work Experience

Visits/Trips to include Maintec & Mach show, Plymouth University and a range of local employers. Guest Speakers from Plymouth University, suppliers and specialists as well as Community and charitable projects.

  Assessment

You will be assessed through online assessment, practical assignments and through written reports. All assessment activity will be planned and the timetable shared with you at the beginning of the academic year. The assessments will be linked to the taught units and assessments will coincide with unit progress and completion. You will be informed of progress after the assessments, with overall progress tracked and available to view to ensure you can monitor progress towards agreed targets.

  Progression

Once you have completed the Level 1 course, you’ll have a real awareness of engineering and be ready to move on to the more advanced Level 2 and 3 courses. Upon successful completion of these more advanced courses there is a potential that this could lead to an apprenticeship within the engineering industry, so if you want to earn while you learn, then you can consider this option.

The focus is on developing your knowledge application, experimental, research and practical engineering techniques. Whilst preparing you to professionally present your findings and demonstrate these essential skills. You’ll be using industry-standard technology as you work on exciting practical projects, studying a diverse range of engineering areas such as fabrication and welding, machining, electrical, maintenance, manufacturing. You will cover content including pneumatics and hydraulics, welding techniques, manufacturing processes, electrical systems (industry motors and drives), PLCs, steam and refrigeration systems, it’s the perfect start to a career in engineering. Engineering at level 3 comes with a considerable academic content preparing you for a potential future at a University; as well as the expected maths and science there will be units covering project management, design, engineering drawing, business and quality systems; arming you with an academic background to take on any challenge.
