If you’ve ever had a fascination for how things are made, or improving the way something works, then a career in engineering could be for you. This course is your first introduction to the world of engineering, where you’ll develop the essential skills and discover the different opportunities that a hi-tech career can offer. The engineering programme at Level 1 is best suited if you are considering a career in Engineering. The course will provide you with the essential core skills required as an engineer. You will gain exposure to a real life engineering workshop and undertake practical assessments using relevant industry equipment and technology. You will also learn how to work within a team and develop on your literacy and numeracy skills.

You will be using traditional engineering equipment commonly found in many engineering and manufacturing employers in Cornwall.

  What You Will Learn

The engineering programme at Level 1 is best suited if you are considering a career in Engineering. The course will provide you with the essential skills required as an engineer. You will gain exposure to a real life-engineering workshop and undertake practical assessments using relevant industry equipment and technology. You will also learn how to work within a team and develop your maths and English skills.

  Entry Requirements

You will need Maths and English plus two other GCSEs at Level 3

  Work Experience

Visits/Trips to include Maintec & Mach show, Plymouth University and a range of local employers. Guest Speakers from Plymouth University, suppliers and specialists as well as Community and charitable projects.

  Assessment

You will be assessed through online assessment, practical assignments and through written reports. All assessment activity will be planned and the timetable shared with you at the beginning of the academic year. The assessments will be linked to the taught units and assessments will coincide with unit progress and completion. You will be informed of progress after the assessments, with overall progress tracked and available to view to ensure you can monitor progress towards agreed targets.

  Progression

Once you have completed the Level 1 course, you’ll have a real awareness of engineering and be ready to move on to the more advanced Level 2 and 3 courses. Upon successful completion of these more advanced courses there is a potential that this could lead to an apprenticeship within the engineering industry, so if you want to earn while you learn, then you can consider this option.

Level 5 • Part-time • Cornwall College Camborne, Cornwall College St Austell


This programme prepares you for a career in a variety of engineering disciplines and develops the concepts, knowledge, skills and techniques required for today’s competitive and dynamic engineering industry. The programme consists of core modules and a series of optional modules, allowing you to focus your learning in areas of interest. Modules of study in the fields of mechanical, electrical, design, production, marine and control engineering, are included to allow for a wide range of possible career goals. The modules have been written with the aid of industry to ensure that the content meets industry needs; they include current best practice and insight into the changing face of engineering technology. You will have a series of structured lectures, project-based practical activities and industrial visits to help inform and develop your learning. These activities will increase your ability to solve engineering problems, develop your project management skills and help you gain an understanding of the role of engineering in the modern technological world. All modules will consider the modern world of engineering and will contextualise material to reflect on engineering practice. It is suggested that you undertake around 150 hours of work experience in an engineering field to support your learning. We will help you to find an appropriate placement if you are unable to find your own.

Standards Apprenticeship – Engineering Technician (Fitter)

Level 3 • Work-based • Cornwall College Camborne, Cornwall College St Austell


This Level 3 apprenticeship is ideal if you want to start your journey to becoming a qualified engineer. The apprenticeship route provides an ideal foundation for a wide range of skills within the engineering field. Within the 4-year apprenticeship you will start from a general engineering platform at the foundation phase (years 1 & 2), where you will learn a grounding in Engineering, with a mix of units. You will learn a range of practical skills, be able to follow technical drawings and work carefully and methodically. The course is 75% practical workshop based with 25% classroom theory work. You will have to complete a range of practical assessments to a high standard alongside reports that detail what you have done and whether you met the required standard. You will then progress onto the development phase (Years 3 & 4) where you will hone your skills specific to your pathway and your job. Learning all the skills and knowledge required in greater depth and understanding that years 1 & 2. This phase is 50% theory and 50% practical. Completing units on a pass/merit/distinction basis. All training is provided by ex-industry experts with many years within their field to guide you through your learning and assessment within the course. Once you have completed the two qualifications (Foundation and Development phases) you will progress to an End Point Assessment, where you will be assessed on your skills and knowledge over a range of tasks and an interview. To ensure you gain all the skills needed for a career as an engineer, you will need to start your apprenticeship at the foundation phase. On successful completion you will move through to the development phase, this will lead to employment or you can continue onto our HNC/HND programs.
