Cornwall College St Austell
Open Event at St Austell Campus
- 12 Feb 2026
- 9 May 2026
As you may have already discovered, when writing a novel, novella or short story, the structure can be tough to get right. It’s wonderful when an unfolding story has tension and suspense. At the same time, structure must stem from character. If a protagonist acts out-of-character for the sake of a twist in the plot, that twist will be less effective.
In this ultra-friendly and supportive four-hour workshop, we will explore methods by which writers use character to develop plot. Taking, as an example, Aryn Kyle’s novel ‘The God of Animals’, we will examine how Kyle uses protagonist blind spots to shape her novel's structure, creating that all-important 'page-turner' effect. Through exercises, workshop participants will then tweak, develop or revise a blueprint for their own fiction project, discovering how fun this can be!
This workshop is ideal for anyone about to embark upon or in the process of revising a novel, novella or short story.
Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.
Attendees will need to purchase and read the whole of Aryn Kyle's ‘The God of Animals’ beforehand. Local bookshops can order this for you. Alternatively, second-hand copies are available online.
Please note: There will be a materials fee of £45 for this course.
