If you have a passion to lead others in the sports, health and fitness industry, then this is the course for you.

The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that you will have the opportunity to focus on your career aspiration via the work based learning module and specialist module options on offer.

This final year Level 6 programme focuses on the practical application of theoretical constructs in an industry relevant manner, with the vision to enhance both employability and entrepreneurial acumen.

It aims to deliver a broader understanding of the scientific underpinnings of public health, sport performance, development and education. This innovative approach will better prepare you for the demands of a continually evolving sport and health related industry in a sustainable manner.

Assessment is through an honours research project, written assignments, presentations, practical placement and theoretical exams.

You will be assessed working on real-life projects from November - May, such as teaching physical education in local primary and secondary schools or developing sport, health and physical activity in the wider community. You may also carry out fitness testing on athletes from local sports clubs. This will allow you to gain essential working hours in a career aspiration of your choice to support your next steps after the program.

  What You Will Learn

This one year degree will support your commercial awareness of the industry you wish to gain employment.

The honours dissertation will give you the opportunity to research and measure a topic that interests you in sport, health and exercise science.

You have two module options to pick from the following four topics (Exercise Physiology, Psychology, Nutrition and Sport Coaching).

The module options will help you to specialise in key industry topics helping to support your professional develop in sport, health & exercise science.

  Entry Requirements

240 credits with 120 at level 5 from a relevant Foundation Degree, HND, or equivalent in an appropriate subject. All qualifications and subject grades will be considered on an individual basis. HND qualifications may require additional bridging modules. You will require a DBS

  Work Experience

You will be assessed working on real-life projects from November - May, such as teaching physical education in local primary and secondary schools or developing sport, health and physical activity in the wider community.

  Assessment

Assessment methods on the course include; reports, presentation, observations and exams.

  Progression

Once you have finished the course you could gain 100+ work placement hours in a career of your choice. This will help to support future interviews and networking with industry professionals. The program will also support future progression onto masters study in relative topics.

During the programme you will study: the sport of surfing as well as surfing businesses; business planning relating to the surfing industry; event management; environmental science; human exercise science; principles of psychology and coaching; design and manufacture of surf boards; the environment and human impacts on it; the development of surfing culture and history; sport-related media and politics; the geographical and climatic influences on surfing. The programme is based at our main Cornwall College Newquay campus. This is an academic programme and although practical surfing is not part of the course, the location provides plenty of opportunities to surf on some of the best beaches in Europe. So, whilst a healthy interest in some aspect of surfing is helpful, you do not need to be an excellent surfer to apply. The programme benefits from very close links with many of the major players in the surfing world. You will have the chance to design and build your own surfboard, take surf coaching, first aid and beach lifeguard qualifications, review competitions, as well as working in an industry-related environment. There is the possibility of taking an optional field trip to the west coast of France and Spain to explore the implications of human and climatic influences on the environment. This trip normally lasts ten days, and it gives you the chance to carry out some fieldwork and learn more about beach topography, oceanography and the different aspects of tourism and business related to the surfing industry. During this trip you will experience first-hand some of the best surf locations in Europe. There will be a number of opportunities to engage with industry throughout the programme and also to complete a work placement in an area of your own interest. As Cornwall is the centre of the surfing industry within the UK, Cornwall College is lucky enough to have links with some of the top names from the industry. There are regular guest speakers and lecturers who help to further engage with you about the many different aspects of the surfing sector. Functional fitness

No Qualification • Distance Learning • Cornwall College Camborne


The more you train functionally, the better you’ll become at working your entire body as one system. Functional training also gives you an excellent kinesthetic awareness (awareness of how your body moves) and teaches you how to move safely. All of these skills are pretty important in everyday life and in the gym, allowing us to move purposefully and confidently and helping us stay sturdy, strong, and safe. This course will run from 9:30-10:30 am Monday 1st March to Monday 8th March (excluding weekends).
