If you have a passion to lead others in the sports, health and fitness industry, then this is the course for you.

The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that you will have the opportunity to focus on your career aspiration via the work based learning module and specialist module options on offer.

This final year Level 6 programme focuses on the practical application of theoretical constructs in an industry relevant manner, with the vision to enhance both employability and entrepreneurial acumen.

It aims to deliver a broader understanding of the scientific underpinnings of public health, sport performance, development and education. This innovative approach will better prepare you for the demands of a continually evolving sport and health related industry in a sustainable manner.

Assessment is through an honours research project, written assignments, presentations, practical placement and theoretical exams.

You will be assessed working on real-life projects from November - May, such as teaching physical education in local primary and secondary schools or developing sport, health and physical activity in the wider community. You may also carry out fitness testing on athletes from local sports clubs. This will allow you to gain essential working hours in a career aspiration of your choice to support your next steps after the program.

  What You Will Learn

This one year degree will support your commercial awareness of the industry you wish to gain employment.

The honours dissertation will give you the opportunity to research and measure a topic that interests you in sport, health and exercise science.

You have two module options to pick from the following four topics (Exercise Physiology, Psychology, Nutrition and Sport Coaching).

The module options will help you to specialise in key industry topics helping to support your professional develop in sport, health & exercise science.

  Entry Requirements

240 credits with 120 at level 5 from a relevant Foundation Degree, HND, or equivalent in an appropriate subject. All qualifications and subject grades will be considered on an individual basis. HND qualifications may require additional bridging modules. You will require a DBS

  Work Experience

You will be assessed working on real-life projects from November - May, such as teaching physical education in local primary and secondary schools or developing sport, health and physical activity in the wider community.

  Assessment

Assessment methods on the course include; reports, presentation, observations and exams.

  Progression

Once you have finished the course you could gain 100+ work placement hours in a career of your choice. This will help to support future interviews and networking with industry professionals. The program will also support future progression onto masters study in relative topics.

If you can’t get enough of sport and/or fitness and have your sights set on becoming a a sports coach, PE teacher or fitness instructor, then this is the course for you. Then this will be on your first step in to a career in the sport, health and fitness industry! The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about both practical and theoretical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time in our on-campus sports hall, a fully equipped gym and 3G pitch. You’ll be looking at everything: strength & conditioning techniques, sporting skills and the beginnings of tactical awareness, along with teamwork and leadership. In addition, you will be carrying out your very own personal fitness plan as you progress through the course. In essence, you’ll be developing all of the essential skills you need to start your journey towards a career in sport, health and fitness. Cornwall College has a selection of college sports teams, which regularly train and compete at a participatory and competitive level. A large selection of enrichment activities are also available, including table tennis, badminton, recreational football, basketball and circuit training. We have excellent links with local employers and sports clubs, providing amazing work experience and volunteering opportunities. Many of our students have gone on to employment further afield or abroad. As a Level 2 course, this diploma is all about introducing you to everything from the theory behind how the body works, to the practical steps needed to plan and coach your very own sport/fitness session. YMCA Diploma in Exercise Referral

The role of an exercise referral instructor is one of the most important in the industry. With health conditions such as obesity, depression and type 2 diabetes on the rise, using exercise to reduce the implications of these conditions is becoming an essential intervention and supported by medical professionals worldwide. If having a rewarding career where you positively improve the health of an individual is for you then this course could be your next step. Cornwall College has a working exercise referral scheme with St Austell healthcare so those undertaking the course will have hands on experience of the entire process involved from the client being referred, to the exit strategies of the scheme when the client has completed and hopefully achieved their goals. In addition to this you will have the opportunity to gain experience with real clients in collaboration with other referral schemes in the community where partnerships have been made to enhance your learning experience. This will allow you to get the most out of your learning by directly applying theory into practice with the guidance of not only your college tutor but other industry experts. Our industry experienced lecturers are fully qualified and practicing fitness professionals themselves and will guide you towards a career as an exercise referral instructor. You will learn about a variety of medical conditions and how to prescribe safe and effective exercise. You will gain knowledge on the exercise referral process and how the fitness professional is involved as well as risk stratification ensuring that the benefit of exercise for the client outweighs the risk it may pose. This course is perfect for qualified personal trainers who are looking to develop their breadth of clients to those who have more complex medical conditions. In addition to this the NHS long term plan envisages that by 2023 nearly 1 million people will be referred to schemes involving exercise referral meaning that specific job roles in the NHS will be more readily available than they are already.

FdSc Surf Science & Technology (Part-time)

Level 5 • Part-time • Cornwall College Camborne


During the programme you will study: the sport of surfing as well as surfing businesses; business planning relating to the surfing industry; event management; environmental science; human exercise science; principles of psychology and coaching; design and manufacture of surf boards; the environment and human impacts on it; the development of surfing culture and history; sport-related media and politics; the geographical and climatic influences on surfing. The programme is based at our main Cornwall College Newquay campus. This is an academic programme and although practical surfing is not part of the course, the location provides plenty of opportunities to surf on some of the best beaches in Europe. So, whilst a healthy interest in some aspect of surfing is helpful, you do not need to be an excellent surfer to apply. The programme benefits from very close links with many of the major players in the surfing world. You will have the chance to design and build your own surfboard, take surf coaching, first aid and beach lifeguard qualifications, review competitions, as well as working in an industry-related environment. There is the possibility of taking an optional field trip to the west coast of France and Spain to explore the implications of human and climatic influences on the environment. . This trip normally lasts ten days, and it gives you the chance to carry out some fieldwork and learn more about beach topography, oceanography and the different aspects of tourism and business related to the surfing industry. During this trip you will experience first-hand some of the best surf locations in Europe. There will be a number of opportunities to engage with industry throughout the programme and also to complete a work placement in an area of your own interest. As Cornwall is the centre of the surfing industry within the UK, Cornwall College is lucky enough to have links with some of the top names from the industry. There are regular guest speakers and lecturers who help to further engage with you about the many different aspects of the surfing sector. Speakers in the past have included Rob Barber, Dave Reed, Tony Butt and Ester Spears.
