This degree offers an excellent opportunity to increase both your academic skills and your employability. Your second and third years allow you to select optional modules which suit your career aspirations. For example, if you are interested in a career in mental health support you could choose the modules on Psychological Processes and Psychology in Practice. An interest in health promotion could lead you to choose the module in Health Promotion, whereas an interest in developing as a leader could see you choosing the Leadership and Management module. For applicants interested in issues around equality and diversity, there are module choices in Inclusive Practice and Aspects of Rural Life

This top up programme is studied as a one year top-up where you will complete Year 3 only. It also develops critical analysis, understanding research methods, problem solving, ITC, professional development, developing your CV and interview techniques and gaining workplace experience. Developing your communication skills, work-related experience and the opportunity to recognise and consider the relationship between the subjects you study in college and your actual working environment is encouraged.

Assessment is via essays, reports, presentations, seminars and debates. Support, guidance and preparation for all assessments are embedded in study skills sessions and individual modules.

  Entry Requirements

64 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 48 points must be at A2-level) or relevant level 3 qualification, ie BTEC National Diploma / BTEC Extended Diploma - MPP Grades required (specific unit grades may be requested). Access to HE Diplomas in a relevant subject - 45 credits at level 3 (specific unit grades may be requested). Plus GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 or above in English Language and Mathematics: alternatives at Level 2 may be considered. Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply. Entry Requirements for top-up: 240 credits with 120 at level 5 from a relevant Foundation Degree, HND, or equivalent in an appropriate subject. All qualifications and subject grades will be considered on an individual basis. HND qualifications may require additional bridging modules. We also required GCSE grade C or Level 2 English Language.

The course provides in-depth study and training for anyone interested in a career in the Health services or Social Care field and 2 days per week in a range of health and social care settings, with Cornwall Care. It also provides the theory and experience, which will be invaluable for progression into higher education, such as a nursing degree or into employment in the health sector as a practitioner in a variety of settings. You will also have opportunities to develop effective communication techniques as well as a range of practical skills, which are vital to work and progress in this field. There are specialist units that enhance the generic health and social care core subjects, such as mental health issues, psychology and health promotion. Completion of the Care Certificate will form part of this study programme. You will study 3 days per week at the new Cornwall Care training academy at Cornwall College’s St Austell campus and 2 days per week in a range of health and social care settings, with Cornwall Care. You will gain UCAS tariff points that will allow you to progress to university to study degrees such as midwifery, social work, teaching, care management, nursing or other care related subjects.

This means more people will live with serious chronic illnesses and need end of life care. Our level 2 Certificate in Principles of End of Life Care will give you the knowledge you need to perform your role as a care worker for people approaching the end of their lives. You will learn how to support and manage pain and discomfort, as well as gaining insight into the impact of dementia on end of life care. You'll also develop the compassionate skills needed for supporting family and friends with the loss and grief process.
