BA (Hons) Games Design For Industry

Level 6 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne

This 1 year top up, full time, innovative and exciting new games programme has been designed to allow students from the HND or foundation degree (and others where appropriate) to progress to an honours degree to develop an independent, autonomous practice, but with skills and attributes to be part of any team within any typical games design studio. This programme aims to facilitate and equip graduates with the expertise, enthusiasm and flexibility for a future in developing games and their content. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of Agile, entrepreneurship, team management and the techniques and skills needed by the games industry to get you that dream job, or to start your own independent games company. We specialise in providing a typical studio set up with small class sizes to ensure you get excellent support and advice for your studies. You will have greater access to staff and resources, as well as practical specialist knowledge to pursue a career in your chosen area of specialism within the games industry. Tutors will facilitate your independent research into advanced game design skills and techniques reflecting your particular specialism throughout the programme. Team production of prototypes will be explored, as well as methods to improve immersion, narrative and visual impact. You will be encouraged to investigate design innovations such as virtual and augmented reality, to develop new methods of enhancing gameplay, and simulation whilst receiving career and business advice specifically tailored to your individual aspirations. Visits to games festivals such as EGX Rezzed will also inform student practice. You will be encouraged to work creatively and professionally to design and communicate concepts through visuals, prototypes, 3D/2D game assets, game design documents, pitches and presentations often to professionals within the industry. You will use industry standard software such as Autodesk (3D Studio Max, Maya and Mudbox etc), the full Adobe Master collection, UE4 and others. You will also have access to VR headsets such as Oculus Rifts and Vives, excellent sound labs, video cameras, Kinect cameras and blue/green screens etc. Graduates have gone on to work in games studios such as Splash Damage or set up their own independent studios. This is a full-time course; typically, students should expect to spend 35 – 40 hours per week on a combination of taught and self-directed study. Each module is delivered over a 15-week Study Block, which typically comprises 12 weeks of learning and teaching, and 3 weeks of assessment and feedback. Students will engage in a variety of learning activities, including lectures, seminars, private and group tutorials, specialist workshops. Information Technology BTEC National Foundation

If you are interested in a career in programming, Website development, social media or cyber security or you just have a passion for using computers to achieve great things join us on the Foundation/Extended Diploma in Information Technology. The BTEC Foundation Diploma in Information Technology provides you with the skills you need to pursue a career in the exciting and innovative industry of IT. I.T. is about providing solutions through the use of computers, networks, hardware and software. It is in the same subject area to computing but concentrates on making things happen rather than the theory behind how they happen. You will learn how to use computers and I.T. systems to provide applications, Web sites, social media impact, mobile apps/games and secure networks. You can think of these as immediately useful job skills or as a taste of what you could study later on at university. The course includes knowledge and skills in the use of many industry standard areas such as networking, Android app development, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, C/C++ and Java. It also includes more general knowledge such as how to support users and work with organisations in providing I.T. systems. We also have fantastic links with local industry employers who will be involved in your course and may also be interested in you as an employee once you complete the course! I.T. is an enormous area with careers to suit most people. An extra benefit of this course is that it will help you to find out which areas you enjoy the most. Access to HE Diploma in Computing

Level 3 • Full-time • Cornwall College Camborne

The Access to HE Diploma in Computing aims to prepare students for Higher Education in Computing and related disciplines. It is aimed at students, who for whatever reason are unable to pursue traditional routes, for progression to higher education and offering bespoke computing provision to meet the needs of existing Level 4 HE courses. It provides a broad-based educational experience in the core subjects relating to Computing, whilst enabling students to develop relevant HE study skills. The Access to HE Diploma in Computing is designed to ensure students demonstrate ability in core subjects in order to embark on a specialist course in the Computing, Digital or IT Sector. It forms part of Cornwall College's suite of programmes that aim to increase recruitment into the Digital sector by attracting non-traditional learners.
