This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop their skills to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of everyday situations.

The specification has been designed to be consistent with the National Language Standards at Level 2.

Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language is suitable for those who:
• wish to achieve language skills at an intermediate level to improve communication with Deaf people
• are Deaf and wish to gain a qualification in their native language
• are family, friends and colleagues of Deaf people
• want to progress from Level 1 study in BSL, and who may want to progress to more advanced levels of study in BSL at a later date
• are studying for personal development.

This is an evening course and normally runs one evening a week from 6.00pm to 8.00pm for 50 weeks.

Please note - before starting the Level 2 course you will also probably be required to attend the British Sign Language Bridging course which starts on the 15.09.22, from 6.00pm to 8.00pm, for 8 weeks. This will depend on your level of signing and there will be no charge for this course.

  What You Will Learn

The qualification will allow learners to participate in longer and more varied conversations than at Level 1. The course will develop communication in BSL about real life, routine, and daily experiences. The learner will be able to deal with most routine communication and have enough understanding of grammar to cope with some non-routine communication. Learners should be taught a number of regional variations in sign language.

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately. The units can be done in any order at any time but it is recommended that the content of Unit BSL201 is covered before Unit BSL202 or BSL203.

To achieve the full Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language, candidates are required to achieve all units.

  Entry Requirements

BSL competence standards include requirements for candidates to have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL. Students should have either already achieved the Level 1 Award or should already be able to sign at that level. Please note - before starting the Level 2 course you will also probably be required to attend the British Sign Language Bridging course which starts on the 15.09.22, from 6.00pm to 8.00pm, for 8 weeks. This will depend on your level of signing and there will be no charge for this course. This course is aimed at 19+ students.

Clare Reed

A photo of Clare Reed

Clare studied the FdA Early Childhood Studies and the BSc Health, Community and Social Sciences. She chose to study at Saltash as the course fitted in well around her work commitments and childcare needs. She enjoyed the opportunities that occurred during her time at the college.

" I managed to gain a Level 3 Paediatric First Aid certificate and attended conferences that I would otherwise not be privy to. I had the opportunity to fundraise for Childrens Hospice Southwest as part of a module and was privileged enough to visit Little Harbour, a truly humbling experience.

I went into employment as the Charity Coordinator and Youth Worker for TICTAC Liskeard. The setting is within Liskeard School and Community College grounds and I love that I have a broad range of experience with children and young people and that I am able to apply the knowledge achieved throughout my studies."
