This course is aimed at beginners who will learn the basic use of a digital camera. With simple techniques to improve portraits, landscapes, travel photography, special occasions, and competition entries.

You will learn what the controls on your camera are for, and how settings can be used to give effects that can enhance your images. This will include an understanding of exposure and what settings combine to give the right results; what types of image file and colour settings are the best for your camera; basic control of natural, artificial and flash lighting and basic use of photo software; tips for improving the composition of landscapes, portraits, nature and close-up (macro) images.

Students are encouraged each week to try out what they have learnt and the photographs are viewed by the group the following week.

You will need your own digital camera for this course and if you already have one a tripod may also be useful.


This is a FREE* course - apply for your place now.

*This course will be free for students who will be 19+ as of 31.08.21 and have not attended the course before. If you have already attended this course and wish to repeat it a fee will apply.


This course runs on an evening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm for 8 or 7 weeks.

We will be using a range of artists and examples of their artwork as a starting point for conversation, inspiration and idea development. Improving Your Digital Photography (Evening)

No Qualification • Part-time • Cornwall College Camborne


On this course you will learn advanced techniques to improve the quality, lighting and composition of your images. Advanced use of natural, artificial and studio flash lighting. Common uses of photo software. Special techniques; including Panoramas, HDR, and Focus Stacking. The course will take a deeper look at producing high quality landscapes, portraits and close-up photography. This will include the use of well-known software to give the best final image from each exposure, although the emphasis will always be on getting the best results from your camera. We will look at ways of controlling or taking advantage of challenging lighting conditions, and this will include a studio session to gain experience of artificial lighting techniques. Students are encouraged each week to try out what they have leant and the photographs are viewed by the group the following week. This course would be ideally suited to students who have already completed our Beginners Guide to Digital Photography course or are already at this level (please see our Beginners course description). If you are not sure please contact us and we can arrange for you to speak to the tutor to determine the best course for you. This course is for DSLR camera users only. You will need your own DSLR camera and a tripod for this course.
