The Basketball League sessions are a natural lead on session from our Basketball for Beginners course. These sessions are delivered by a qualified Sports Coach with over 18 years experience and are fun filled and interactive.

All the activities are carried out in our Cornwall College Camborne Sports Hall. The sessions are planned with great detail to ensure that all the attendees make progress in skills including balance, coordination, movement skills, throwing, catching and jumping. The Basketball League sessions run in 8 week blocks and all ability levels are welcome.

  What You Will Learn

In these 45 minute sessions, you will participate in both skill and game play drills.

Basketball is a team sport that can develop teamwork and leadership skills, as well as confidence and self esteem. Playing basketball helps to improve motor coordination, flexibility, and endurance. It also encourages speed, agility, and strength. These skills are shown to have a positive effect on promoting a healthy body weight and encouraging more physical activity, which can enhance cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular endurance.

I originally enrolled on the Level 2 course purely to gain the qualification to become a reputable health and fitness journalist (after graduating with a journalism degree). But the course was so interesting, informative and fun that I couldn't resist staying on to complete the Level 3! I didn't even want to leave after that!

The qualifications enabled me to spend a few years working as a personal trainer and gym instructor alongside my writing work. And I know for certain that the knowledge and experience I gained from both the courses and my time spent working as a trainer has enabled me to write content at a much higher standard. It's also helped when interviewing high-level fitness professionals for articles as I can actually understand what they're talking about, which has given me a distinct advantage when pitching articles within the fitness industry. The knowledge has also improved my own training, so it's a win-win!

During the programme you will study: the sport of surfing as well as surfing businesses; business planning relating to the surfing industry; event management; environmental science; human exercise science; principles of psychology and coaching; design and manufacture of surf boards; the environment and human impacts on it; the development of surfing culture and history; sport-related media and politics; the geographical and climatic influences on surfing. The programme is based at our main Cornwall College Newquay campus. This is an academic programme and although practical surfing is not part of the course, the location provides plenty of opportunities to surf on some of the best beaches in Europe. So, whilst a healthy interest in some aspect of surfing is helpful, you do not need to be an excellent surfer to apply. The programme benefits from very close links with many of the major players in the surfing world. You will have the chance to design and build your own surfboard, take surf coaching, first aid and beach lifeguard qualifications, review competitions, as well as working in an industry-related environment. There is the possibility of taking an optional field trip to the west coast of France and Spain to explore the implications of human and climatic influences on the environment. . This trip normally lasts ten days, and it gives you the chance to carry out some fieldwork and learn more about beach topography, oceanography and the different aspects of tourism and business related to the surfing industry. During this trip you will experience first-hand some of the best surf locations in Europe. There will be a number of opportunities to engage with industry throughout the programme and also to complete a work placement in an area of your own interest. As Cornwall is the centre of the surfing industry within the UK, Cornwall College is lucky enough to have links with some of the top names from the industry. There are regular guest speakers and lecturers who help to further engage with you about the many different aspects of the surfing sector. Speakers in the past have included Rob Barber, Dave Reed, Tony Butt and Ester Spears.

To introduce people to martial arts; touching on all basic modalities of my 'brand' if you will: Kickboxing, Self Defence & MA-Related Fitness Training. I hope to help make the students aware of the vast positive implications of martial arts training over the six week period: physical fitness, psychological well being, confidence gained through improving in a physical and mental craft, as well as learning and considering philosophical principles for life.
