This 1 year top up, full time, innovative and exciting new games programme has been designed to allow students from the HND or foundation degree (and others where appropriate) to progress to an honours degree to develop an independent, autonomous practice, but with skills and attributes to be part of any team within any typical games design studio. This programme aims to facilitate and equip graduates with the expertise, enthusiasm and flexibility for a future in developing games and their content. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of Agile, entrepreneurship, team management and the techniques and skills needed by the games industry to get you that dream job, or to start your own independent games company.

We specialise in providing a typical studio set up with small class sizes to ensure you get excellent support and advice for your studies. You will have greater access to staff and resources, as well as practical specialist knowledge to pursue a career in your chosen area of specialism within the games industry.

Tutors will facilitate your independent research into advanced game design skills and techniques reflecting your particular specialism throughout the programme. Team production of prototypes will be explored, as well as methods to improve immersion, narrative and visual impact. You will be encouraged to investigate design innovations such as virtual and augmented reality, to develop new methods of enhancing gameplay, and simulation whilst receiving career and business advice specifically tailored to your individual aspirations. Visits to games festivals such as EGX Rezzed will also inform student practice.

You will be encouraged to work creatively and professionally to design and communicate concepts through visuals, prototypes, 3D/2D game assets, game design documents, pitches and presentations often to professionals within the industry. You will use industry standard software such as Autodesk (3D Studio Max, Maya and Mudbox etc), the full Adobe Master collection, UE4 and others. You will also have access to VR headsets such as Oculus Rifts and Vives, excellent sound labs, video cameras, Kinect cameras and blue/green screens etc.

Graduates have gone on to work in games studios such as Splash Damage or set up their own independent studios.

This is a full-time course; typically, students should expect to spend 35 – 40 hours per week on a combination of taught and self-directed study. Each module is delivered over a 15-week Study Block, which typically comprises 12 weeks of learning and teaching, and 3 weeks of assessment and feedback.

Alice’s fashion designs have been seen on celebrities such as Rita Ora, Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton and Jessie J, she also collaborates with some major manufacturers including Care Bears, My Little Pony and Hello Kitty.

“I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer and the course at Camborne covered lots of different disciplines, which was great as it gave me a wonderful overview of all the various paths open to me and I particularly remember enjoying life drawing. From there I was accepted by The University of Plymouth to study fashion design and on completion of my degree I then moved back to Cornwall and got a job at a high-end fashion boutique, which introduced me to the spectrum of fashion.

My goal was to have my designs on the catwalk at the Clothes Show, so I worked hard, researched a lot, got signed by a portfolio agency and was then contacted by the stylist who wanted me to be involved in the designs for the opening sequence to the show. From there I received work from the X-Factor, Got to Dance and worked with Vogue on a Range Rover launch. "

If you love Art and Design; you get excited about finding creative solutions to problems, enjoy working with your hands, investigating why and how other artists’ and designers’ work, then this is the course for you. The Level 3 Extended Diploma Art and Design is an exciting two year course; in the first year you are encouraged to explore all areas of the arts, to achieve the Diploma. You will begin to determine your specialist pathways when you progress onto the Extended Diploma, in the second year. At the start of each year you are allocated your own studio space, which you can make your own and use as a base throughout the year. In the first year you will take part in a wide range of practical workshops in our studios, in order to develop your skills in drawing, painting, working with mixed media, graphics and digital media, textiles, printmaking, ceramics, photography and 3 dimensional work. Projects and workshops are linked to relevant creative careers, to help you understand where your skills might be used, in the creative industries. The year is completed with a Final Project and a Summer Exhibition. The second year is an opportunity for you to decide on your specialist pathway, such as Fashion, Textiles, Photography, Fine Art, Graphic Design etc. All the work you have done to date is organised into a portfolio, either for job and apprenticeship applications, or university entrance via UCAS. Focused support for progression is given throughout the Autumn term, whilst practical projects continue to provide opportunities for you to take greater responsibility for your own practice, including decision making and time management. There will be an emphasis on projects negotiated between you and your tutors. This year culminates in an extensive Final Major Project, which is exhibited in the Summer Exhibition. Underpinning all aspects of the course is an engaging programme of contextual studies and you will take part in gallery and location visits, written assignments and tutorials throughout the course, as well as relevant work experience, employer-led projects, commissions and exhibitions.
