Altitude Dance Diploma

Do you love to perform or create movement? Have you had a lifelong passion for dance? Perhaps you’ve been dancing since you were five years old, perhaps you are just beginning your journey and wish to explore an inherent talent and desire to explore dance further?

Our Altitude dance programme at our St Austell campus has a renowned reputation, which has enabled students to progress to some of the most prestigious dance schools and conservatoires in the country or even directly in to the industry. Our outstanding facilities include The Keay Theatre, professional, heated & sprung dance studios, as well as other rehearsal and performance spaces?

If you are considering a career in the dance industry then we offer you the choice of three specialist courses, all of which are equivalent to A-levels. Our Level 2 Musical Theatre Course provides you with the opportunity to study both Dance and Learn exhilarating subjects such as Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Urban, Commercial, Improvisation, Movement, Rehearsing, Performing, Teaching and Choreography. Take part in daily dance technique classes which incorporate strengthening exercises to keep you strong! You will also have access to acting and music lessons.

With such diverse subjects on offer, students have the opportunity to explore and develop a variety of styles and skills through project work to assist them with their onward journey as a dance practitioner or related field.

JAZZ PATRON

Born and raised in Cornwall, Jake has always been a person who aims high and achieves his goals. Jake studied at Cornwall College, St Austell within dance so he could receive the highest amount of knowledge and physical training as well as academics during his time there. From College Jake moved to London to continue studying at London Studio Centre conservatoire of dance and drama, where he furthered his technique and skill set to achieve a B.A (Hons) Degree in the performing arts.

Jake’s career is vast and versatile, working on projects in tv, film and artist work. Jake continues to work in starring in roles in films such as Mary Poppins Returns, Rocketman and “Mamma Mia: Here we go again” to name a few. Jake has also worked with various artists including Katy Perry, One Republic, The Jonas Brothers, Take That and also One Ok Rock as their Lead dancer for the music video “Bedroom Warfare” which amounted 17 Million views on YouTube.
Now Jake lives in Los Angeles in America where he has been working since 2019.

A short message from Jake:

“I had such an incredible experience at Cornwall College. The course was useful and allowed me to expand my wheelhouse of styles by giving me continued exploration within the course. The amount of time spent learning on the course was valuable from each of the teachers that supported me and pushed me throughout. I can’t thank the course at Cornwall College enough for the time and effort they put into me as a student.”

As part of Jake’s role as the Jazz Patron for the course, he will greet the dancers in their welcome weeks, supporting learners throughout the year to check in on their progress, provide feedback and guidance to support them, audition support, answering any questions they might have and working closely with the Study Programme Manager to ensure our curriculum is current.




PATRON OF CONTEMPORARY DANCE - TOM DAVIS- DUNN

Tom trained at Cornwall College St Austell in Dance before graduating from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) in 2017 and has since had the privilege of working with the likes of Lloyd Newson DV8/Rambert for the revival and world tour of Enter Achilles, Gary Clarke – Wasteland, Theo Lowe, Jamaal Burkmar, amongst many others and currently a company member of Akram Khan Company for the new work ‘Jungle Book Reimagined’. Tom has a keen eye for detail and strives himself on delivering the best quality of work at all times with enthusiasm and rigour. Tom constantly explores his movement practice with curiosity and generosity, immersing himself into the depths of his thinking body to find new paths, questioning his artistry with consideration and dexterity.

What you will learn

You will learn through a range of exhilarating units covering subjects such as Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Commercial and Body Conditioning. You will also have the opportunity to participate in acting, music and stage craft lessons. As well as this you will take part in project work that will encourage you to become an intelligent and reflective dance artist and enable you to develop fundamental skills to support you moving within your career.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 4, including English or mathematics. Successful selection is also based on interview and an audition.

Work experience

As part of the course you will partake in work experience to prepare you to progress into the performing arts industry. In your first year of study you will complete around 2 weeks of work experience.

In your second year you will undergo an industry placement which will be 1 day a week as well as 3 weeks at the end of the year.

Exciting examples of where you could go include dance companies, holiday parks, theatre’s and schools etc.

Assessment

You will be assessed on the Dance course through project and technique work and a mixture of practical and theory work which is made up of reflective writing, journals, creative websites and the creation of portfolios. Our courses awarding body is UAL who are arts focused, there will be no exams on this course.

Progression

Continue to higher education study or conservatoire training. Successful completion of Altitude Dance will give you a guaranteed place on the BA (Hons) Dance at Falmouth University. Learners have gone on to study at Trinity Laban, NSCD, Performers College, Bodywork, London Studio Centre, Shockout Arts, Urdang, Middlesex University, Laine Theatre Arts, The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and more.
