Why not consider a career in aviation? Develop your skills and acquire valuable experience in a fast-paced, challenging engineering sector. Combining study with practical learning, our aeronautical courses offer an exciting foundation for a career in aeronautical engineering.
This course will teach you the basics of aviation engineering, you will study subjects such as the fundamentals of aviation science, airframe construction, electronic principles and the theory of flight amongst many others. You’ll be developing essential hand fitting skills at our fully equipped fabrication workshop and through our partnership with Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre carrying out aircraft maintenance and repair activities as you progress through the course.
You’ll be learning from experienced professionals who are there to give you the very best start to your career. Whether you are interested in flying or engineering, either in the civil industry or the military then Cornwall College can set you on the path.
What our students say:
"This year so far at Cornwall College has been more intriguing than the last. We now have our own ejection seat to work on and we are able to put our theory learning into some practical work which gives us all a clearer insight into the aircraft industry and what it would be like to work on a genuine aircraft. Our class and the Serco apprentices had a trip out to Newquay airport, where we were able to see aircraft in person and have a better understanding of the aircraft world, if we had any questions all we had to do was ask and David or Paul would be to help us understand and clearly see how all parts are used inside and outside the aircraft." - George Besford Level 2 Aircraft Maintenance
What our tutors say (blog extract):
'The last few weeks has seen some exciting additions to the practical side of our Aeronautical Engineering programme.
Firstly, we took delivery of a Martin-Baker Mk2 ejection seat which saw service in a Canberra T22 aircraft. This seat is deactivated but is 95% complete and will see a full restoration courtesy of our Level 3 Aero students. This will help them gain experience with stripping, servicing and reassembling aircraft related mechanical components. The seat’s new home is our new Aero practical area that sits within the main Brunel workshops. This area contains many aircraft components that our students have already put to use this week by practicing their wire locking skills.
Secondly, we have moved our Rolls Royce Viper turbo jet engine from its temporary home at Newquay Airport and it is now on display in the Brunel foyer. This engine was fitted to our Jet Provost aircraft which remains at Newquay. The students have already enjoyed looking over the engine and in time, they will be starting to strip and recondition various components from it. The engine will also help greatly in the teaching of jet propulsion theory.
Finally, the Level 3 full-time and apprentice students spent a day at the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre at Newquay, touring the Centre and carrying out control cable maintenance tasks that are required for their PEOs. These tasks were carried out on the Centre’s Percival Pembroke aircraft. We hope to carry out more visits in the new year and strengthen the close relationship we already have formed with the Centre.' - Paul Case
