This course will teach you the basics of aviation engineering, you will study subjects such as the fundamentals of aviation science, airframe construction, electronic principles and the theory of flight amongst many others. You’ll be developing essential hand fitting skills at our fully equipped fabrication workshop and through our partnership with Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre carrying out aircraft maintenance and repair activities as you progress through the course.

You’ll be learning from experienced professionals who are there to give you the very best start to your career. Whether you are interested in flying or engineering, either in the civil industry or the military then Cornwall College can set you on the path.

'The last few weeks has seen some exciting additions to the practical side of our Aeronautical Engineering programme.

Firstly, we took delivery of a Martin-Baker Mk2 ejection seat which saw service in a Canberra T22 aircraft. This seat is deactivated but is 95% complete and will see a full restoration courtesy of our Level 3 Aero students. This will help them gain experience with stripping, servicing and reassembling aircraft related mechanical components. The seat’s new home is our new Aero practical area that sits within the main Brunel workshops. This area contains many aircraft components that our students have already put to use this week by practicing their wire locking skills.

Secondly, we have moved our Rolls Royce Viper turbo jet engine from its temporary home at Newquay Airport and it is now on display in the Brunel foyer. This engine was fitted to our Jet Provost aircraft which remains at Newquay. The students have already enjoyed looking over the engine and in time, they will be starting to strip and recondition various components from it. The engine will also help greatly in the teaching of jet propulsion theory.

Finally, the Level 3 full-time and apprentice students spent a day at the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre at Newquay, touring the Centre and carrying out control cable maintenance tasks that are required for their PEOs. These tasks were carried out on the Centre’s Percival Pembroke aircraft. We hope to carry out more visits in the new year and strengthen the close relationship we already have formed with the Centre.' - Paul Case

  What You Will Learn

These courses will explain systems, components and terminology used in the aviation industry, you will learn the theory of flight to material testing and practical sessions in riveting and sheet metal repairs, we cover all of the systems an aircraft needs to fly safely as well as how the aircraft are maintained.

The college will encourage you to maximise both your professional and personal growth.? As well as gaining valuable experience, you will get support with coaching and mentoring to progress your personal development.

  Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English, mathematics and science, equivalents are accepted.

  Work Experience

It is a requirement for all 16-18 funded Study Programme learners, as part of your course, to undertake a work experience placement with a local employer, who works in the same sector as the area in which you will be studying, this would be for a minimum duration of one week. Industry Placements offer an exciting opportunity to enhance your skills and knowledge, allow you to understand first-hand the sector in which you would like to work.

  Assessment

You will be assessed through online assessment, practical assignments and through multi-choice exams

  Progression

At Level 2, this diploma is all about introducing you to the aviation industry and developing your essential skills while level 3?will give you a sound basis to move onto further education or provide employment opportunities that might include working in any of the armed forces or as an aircraft technician in the civil aircraft industry.

This is a welding course for all; if you are a complete beginner with limited welding knowledge or an advanced welder requiring the British Standard 4872 coding. The Advanced Welding is British Standard 4872 training and testing part 1 (steel) the assessments are carried out by a Welding Institute Qualified, CSWIP trained Weld Tester. On this practical hands-on course, you will have the opportunity to learn various processes and procedures, whilst working towards a recognised industry standard in welding, if desired The welding processes available are: MIG/MAGS – Metal Arc Gas Shielded known a mig T.I.G. – Tungsten Inert Gas MMA – Manual Metal ARC known as arc or stick All Positions: Horizontal/Vertical (H/V), Flat Vertical and Overhead The delivery and assessments are carried out by a Welding Institute Qualified, CSWIP trained Weld Tester PPE required for the course Appropriate PPE must be worn in the workshop (cotton boiler suit and steel toe capped boots must be brought by the candidate, although we can provide gloves and masks for the duration of the course). NB Please be aware that due to the nature of the activity, contact lenses should not be warn in the welding workshop, although glasses may be work with safety specs of goggles over the top. Tungsten Inert Gas Welding Skills – Introduction

Introductory welding skills in TIG. This qualification will teach you the fundamental underpinning knowledge, relevant to your chosen welding process including, safety, use of equipment and choice on consumables. Your will learn how to set the welding parameters and electrical conditions, relevant to the welding process required and material to be joined. Furthermore you will develop the practical skills required to safely produce five practical welding tests in the flat horizontal/vertical positions.
