Access courses are designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to Higher Education.

The course is challenging and requires full attendance and absolute commitment to allow you to fully maximise your opportunities; you will have access to a range of support mechanisms to enable you to develop the key academic competencies to contribute towards successful progression.

The course runs from September until the end of June/early July.

This is a challenging course and it is expected that students will complete a minimum of 15 hours of independent study each week. Students may access college facilities on the days that they are not taught with some evening study available.

Please also be advised that most universities require work experience to complement your UCAS application-therefore it is highly recommended that you are working within the health care sector in either a voluntary or paid capacity.

Please Note: This course is only available to applicants who are 19+

  What You Will Learn

A range of subjects including -

Study Skills
Psychology
Sociology
Social Policy
Biology

You will also be given advice on writing a personal statement and completing a UCAS application.

  Entry Requirements

Although there aren't any specific entry requirements, all applicants will be invited to attend an Access Workshop where full course information is given and you will be expected to complete the Initial Assessment and a written exercise. Most healthcare based university degrees now stipulate that all applicants need to have at least a C grade in english and maths, therefore priority will be given to applicants who already meet these entry requirements. On occasion, the Access and GCSE teams may allow applicants to sit one of the GCSE’s along the Access programme, but this will be at the discretion of the Course Managers and is usually only applicable if the applicant has achieved a grade D at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2 in the relevant subject. If an applicant does not have either GCSE, it is highly recommended that they apply to Cornwall College GCSE faculty to achieve these prior to submitting an application for an Access course.

  Progression

Access courses are specially designed to prepare students for entry into Higher Education and provide the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to progress to a degree or diploma course at college or university. This will provide you with the entry requirements for a range of health degrees including; Adult Nursing, Child Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy etc.

My time at Cornwall College has quite literally changed my life. Completing the access course has allowed me to progress onto university and fulfill my dream of becoming a midwife.

I chose Cornwall College as the hours for the access course suited my family commitments. After attending an open day, I was also impressed with the support available to students.

The support I have received from my lecturers, my tutor and fellow students has been amazing. After being out of education for 15 years the access course has given me the skills and confidence to progress onto university. The learning curve over the last 9 months has been incredible and I will be forever grateful to those that supported me.
