Work Based Diploma in Horse Care

Basically, you will be studying all aspects of equestrianism to build and develop you theoretical knowledge and working on improving your practical skills. We are very lucky to have 2 indoor schools and 1 outdoor school, stabling for 55 horses, that are all rubber matted and have automatic water drinkers. We have a 5 horse horse-walker, 2 hot wash bays and solariums, and heated tack rooms. We have 30 acres of grazing that is split into smaller paddocks, a cross country schooling area and lots of beautiful hacking available. On evenings and weekends we run competitions or hire our facilities to a range of different awarding bodies, including British Dressage, British Showjumping, The Riding for the Disabled Association and the British Horse Driving Trials Association. Diploma in Equine Management

If you already have experience with horses as well as the passion & determination to turn it into a career then this is the course for you. It will help you to take your existing skills to a professional sphere & prepare you to work in the equine industry or progress to higher education. You will have lectures in a range of subjects from Nutrition to Fitness, as well as practical lessons. Level 3 students organise and run shows in a range of disciplines and also have the chance to compete in them on our college horses. We are also a BHS exam centre so can support you in taking these additional qualifications. When on yard duties you will be undertaking normal horse care tasks such as feeding, mucking out, grooming and also clipping throughout the winter. As part of the duty team you will also have the opportunity to learn supervisory skills, getting you ready for a career with horses. We often have competitions at weekends in our Equestrian Centre so you will also have the opportunity to get involved with these. You could learn to be a steward, work with a course builder or write for a dressage judge. Land-Based Studies (Agriculture) City & Guilds Diploma

If you love everything to do with agriculture and have your sights set on working within the agriculture industry, then this is the course for you and will be your first step in your career. The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time on the college farm, learning by doing as you work on a range of tasks with the livestock, machinery, crops and farm estate. Our working farm features 260 head dairy herd, 200 ewes, and a small number of pigs, whose piglets we rear and sell through a local butcher. We are also in the process of building the Future Farm. There really has never been a more exciting time to be part of agriculture at Duchy. You’ll be working with all the livestock on the farm: cattle, sheep and pigs. You’ll be performing tasks that help to maintain their accommodation, health treatments and selection for breeding and for sale. Alongside this, you will assist with a range of estate maintenance tasks, like fencing and maintenance of structures.
