We are changing the world. Despite our great progression as a global society we have also generated serious environmental issues. As a planet we are now tasked with decoupling development and environmental depletion before we meet our limits; this course is focused on generating an approach to problem solving and environmental management that will allow you to steer your life, your career and the world in a direction that we can be proud to hand over to our childeren. At the end of this course, you’ll be looking at having achieved up to 28 UCAS points to help you study a university degree and you’ll have developed a skillset that every industry sector needs in the near future. Delivery one evening a week will be online with occasional opportunity for campus visits, supported by tutorial sessions within the working week.

FdSc Zoology with Ecology and Conservation

Globally we are thinking more than ever about our natural world, the world has moved on from the traditional thinking of zoology, where habitats and species exist in almost isolated units, to more progressive thinking of ecosystems operating with both animal and habitat reliant on the other.
This course is designed for those students that want to progress into employment within ecology and conservation - whether it is working as an ecologist on conservation programmes in the UK or abroad or working in Ecological Consultancy.
The first stage sets students with the basics in ecological theory, survey techniques, statistics and scientific report writing. Stage two allows the students to follow one of two pathways, either specialising more on UK-based conservation and ecology or taking a more global conservation focus, with the optional modules of One Plan Conservation and Global Conservation Issues.

FdSc Animal Behaviour and Welfare

The programme is for students interested in working with animals, for example in a zoo, on a farm or with companion animals. Applicants wishing to increase their knowledge in areas such as animal behaviour, training, nutrition, welfare and biology and those interested in improving their practical skills and experience with a range of animals, will benefit from this programme. This course provides the opportunity for students to develop a range of skills that would allow them to move into the animal care or training sector working with animals throughout our society with optional modules to allow for program tailoring to personal interests.
Students will be taught by experienced and passionate lecturers and will learn contemporary techniques for the husbandry and training of animals to a high welfare standard informed by the latest research. Our small community learning environment allows staff to provide a bespoke experience for students to allow them to develop in the field of their choice.
Through our classroom-based teaching, the college group’s own animal collections and partnerships with the Wild Planet Trust’s Newquay Zoo and Prickles and Paws rehabilitation centre it provides the practical experience, skills and knowledge required for managing companion, zoo, farm, wild and rescued animals. The programme offers a series of modules to develop skills in many areas of animal care, animal welfare and animal behaviour and training. Alongside our partnerships we visit a number of training facilities and animal collections nationally and internationally to allow students to evaluate best practice for the training and husbandry of animals in our care.
Our close association with industry partners allows us to provide industry active instructors on our modules and opportunities for industry relevant experience. We pride ourselves in supporting students through industry experience during their degree, giving them on the ground experience in the sector.

This 1 year top up programme is designed for foundation degree graduates wishing to progress to an honours degree. The programme will further develop skills of scientific analysis, communication and evaluation. You will gain an understanding of applied zoology which will enhance your opportunities for employment or postgraduate study.
Optional modules focus on a number of topics including: the conservation and monitoring of wild terrestrial and aquatic animals; mapping techniques using geographic information systems (GIS); developing ways in which to communicate ideas and messages about conservation issues to wider society; and evaluating the impacts of animal disease.
You will be given training to help develop your analytical and research skills in preparation for the Honours Project, where you explore an area of interest in greater depth.
Through our close connection to a number of conservation and animal welfare organisations, this programme will extend your knowledge of animal biology beyond foundation degree level, with the emphasis of your studies chosen by you.
The programme will apply knowledge in these fields, particularly in South West England, but also internationally. There will also be some formative assessment by mini in-class tests, presentations and group work.
Opportunities also exist to enhance your skills and experience via attending one of the optional residential international field trips to Borneo, South Africa or Honduras (subject to additional fee and availability)

BSc (Hons) Applied Zoology & Conservation (including sandwich year)

The BSc (Hons) Applied Zoology and Conservation is a full-time four year programme designed to equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to work within the field of conservation.
Modules cover a range of subjects from anatomy and physiology to behaviour and population/habitat management.
There is an emphasis on practical application using both national and international examples, and utilising field specialists within the institute and externally as guest speakers to discuss current issues and research in zoological conservation.
The placement year will take place between years 2 and 3, requiring a total of 26 weeks on placement with either a single or multiple relevant employers/organisations. During the placement year you will need to conduct an independent research project and will be supported in the lead up to the placement and throughout by a placement year supervisor. The research conducted as part of the placement year project cannot be used for the Honours Project in Year 3.

BSc (Hons) Applied Zoology and Conservation

This degree equips you with the necessary skills and knowledge to work within the field of conservation. There is an emphasis on practical application using both national and international examples, and utilising field specialists within the institute and externally as guest speakers to discuss current issues and research in conservation.
Modules cover a range of subjects from anatomy and physiology to specific animal behaviour and population management. A range of optional modules in the second and third years allows you to personalise your degree programme.
The programme is delivered at Cornwall College Newquay with a range of lectures, workshops, seminars, laboratory and field-based practical sessions.
There will be some modules taught in situ utilising the surrounding environment, for example habitat and wildlife surveys within the first year Fieldwork module. These will involve a mix of day or residential field trips to develop
and apply survey techniques in the field.
