FdSc Sport, Health & Fitness

Level 5 • Full-time • Sports & Fitness department


This programme is designed in conjunction with industry experts. It equips you with a range of skills and knowledge to allow you to find employment in a range of jobs within the sport, health and leisure sector, as well as the rapidly growing health and fitness industry. It is delivered through a variety of formal lectures, small group seminars and practical sessions. All lecturing staff are university graduates and many are qualified to postgraduate level as well as being involved in research and professional development in the areas of sports science, exercise referral, health, sports injuries and coaching. A range of additional qualifications to help make you more employable may also be available to study, alongside the programme should you choose to do so. These will incur additional costs, take place during weekends and evenings, and may include: YMCA Level 2 Fitness Instructor, Circuit Training Instructor, Kettlebell Instructor, YMCA Level 3 Personal Trainer, NGB specific qualifications and the RLSS National Pool Lifeguard.

FdSc Surf Science & Technology (Part-time)

Level 5 • Part-time • Sports & Fitness department


During the programme you will study: the sport of surfing as well as surfing businesses; business planning relating to the surfing industry; event management; environmental science; human exercise science; principles of psychology and coaching; design and manufacture of surf boards; the environment and human impacts on it; the development of surfing culture and history; sport-related media and politics; the geographical and climatic influences on surfing. The programme is based at our main Cornwall College Newquay campus and at our premises on Tolcarne Beach in Newquay. This is an academic programme and although practical surfing is not part of the course, the location provides plenty of opportunities to surf on some of the best beaches in Europe. So, whilst a healthy interest in some aspect of surfing is helpful, you do not need to be an excellent surfer to apply. The programme benefits from very close links with many of the major players in the surfing world. You will have the chance to design and build your own surfboard, take surf coaching, first aid and beach lifeguard qualifications, review competitions, as well as working in an industry-related environment. There is the possibility of taking an optional field trip to the west coast of France and Spain to explore the implications of human and climatic influences on the environment. . This trip normally lasts ten days, and it gives you the chance to carry out some fieldwork and learn more about beach topography, oceanography and the different aspects of tourism and business related to the surfing industry. During this trip you will experience first-hand some of the best surf locations in Europe. There will be a number of opportunities to engage with industry throughout the programme and also to complete a work placement in an area of your own interest. As Cornwall is the centre of the surfing industry within the UK, Cornwall College is lucky enough to have links with some of the top names from the industry. There are regular guest speakers and lecturers who help to further engage with you about the many different aspects of the surfing sector. Speakers in the past have included Rob Barber, Dave Reed, Tony Butt and Ester Spears.

BSc (Hons) Sport, Health & Exercise Science Level 6

Level 6 • Full-time • Sports & Fitness department


This final year Level 6 programme focuses on the practical application of theoretical constructs in an industry relevant manner, with the vision to enhance both employability and entrepreneurial acumen. It aims to deliver a broader understanding of the scientific underpinnings of health related promotion, sport performance, development and education. This innovative approach will better prepare you for the demands of a continually evolving sport and health related industry in a sustainable manner. You will be assessed working on real-life projects, such as teaching physical education in local primary and secondary schools or developing sport, health and physical activity in the wider community. You may also carry out fitness testing on athletes from local sports clubs.

BSc (Hons) Marine Sports Science (Level 6 only)

Level 6 • Part-time • Sports & Fitness department


This programme is studied as a one year top-up from a relevant foundation degree, where you will complete Year 3 only. Based at our main Cornwall College Newquay campus you will have the opportunity to study a number of different modules relating to the ocean environment in which you practise your sport, including research into issues arising from the environmental impacts of marine sports and contemporary issues relating to the practice and development of a variety of marine sports. As an academic course you will study a range of modules reviewing current practice and literature, and you will complete an Honours project culminating in a dissertation enabling you to become an expert on a topic of interest to you. Alongside this you will explore the essential business, management, transferable and soft skills, which are key to graduate level employment. Sustainability of marine sector sporting activities and environmental awareness will be considered alongside new and developing technology in the industry.
