Gardening - Your Road To Wellbeing

On this course you will develop your gardening skills whilst working as part of the team to maintain and enhance community centre grounds. As well as planting herbs, plants and shrubs you will also learn how to take cuttings, propagate, and maintain and develop the established gardens at one of our off-site locations. Richmond House, Penzance – Wednesdays 10am – 12:30pm and 1pm – 3:30pm Liskerrett Centre, Liskeard – Thursdays 10am – 4pm Coach House, Liskeard – Fridays 10am – 3pm Richmond House has a small greenhouse, many containers and a small vegetable area and fruit trees. Liskerrett Centre has a polytunnel, containers and areas suitable for growing a variety of produce and fruit trees. You will also help support the community store within the centre. The Coach House has a large polytunnel, small greenhouse, sheds, many containers and a small vegetable area and fruit trees. It is a peaceful area to learn gardening skills, how to use plants in a culinary and medicinal way, designing the garden, companion planting, composting and organic gardening. At all locations you will be encouraged to focus on areas of interest to you with tutor support. Our road to wellbeing courses are relaxed and informal, enabling you to improve your wellbeing and mental health, building your self-confidence, and they are a great way to make friends. Our courses are for anyone aged 19+ who is experiencing or recovering from mental ill-health. Our courses run one day per week, over 10 to 13 weeks per term. This is an exciting new project where you can develop your gardening skills and knowledge in a quiet area of the St Austell campus. You will learn how to plant seeds, propagate and grow a variety of plants, herbs and vegetables whilst being mindful of the local habitats and conservation. Your road to wellbeing courses are relaxed and informal, enabling you to improve your wellbeing and mental health, building your self-confidence, and a great way to make friends. Our courses are for anyone aged 19 plus who is experiencing or recovering from mental ill health. Our courses run one day per week, over 10 to 13 weeks per term. Practical Horticulture - City & Guilds Level 1

Level 1 • Part-time • Offsite


This course is run at CROP Gardens, Plymouth, a horticultural site managed by Livewell. This is an accredited course focussing upon the fundamental practical skills in horticulture, you will be able to learn skills such as planting out, preparing ground, pruning, using a mower, maintaining turf or constructing a path. There are various plots and poly-tunnels and you will have the opportunity to plant, propagate and grow a variety of plants and produce. Your Road to Wellbeing courses are relaxed and informal, enabling you to improve your wellbeing and mental health whilst building your self-confidence and a great way to make friends. Our courses run one day per week, over 10 to 13 weeks per term. This is a one year course starting in September each year. An award, certificate or diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills is for young people (16+) and adults getting started in the horticulture industry. You don't need any previous experience or a current work placement.

FdSc Horticulture

Level 5 • Part-time • Eden Project


Horticulture is a modern, professional vocation that influences our environment, how we eat, how we relax, our health, life expectancy and well-being. This programme is offered at the world renowned Eden Project in Cornwall and has been designed specifically to allow you to explore many aspects of horticulture including applied science, sustainability and design. It provides opportunities to gain and reflect on practical experience in two distinct work placements. The programme will also provide you with the skills and experience to prepare for an interesting, exciting and rewarding career which embraces tradition, technology and innovation. Both the programme of study and student experience are greatly enhanced through the collaboration between Cornwall College and the Eden Project. The range of resources including Eden’s own plant collections, growing environments, nursery and dedicated teaching facilities, coupled with the nationally renowned micro-propagation research facility, provide a world-class platform from which this exciting and stimulating programme will be delivered. You will quickly become integrated within the Eden Project and, in addition to attending the carefully designed taught modules, will have the opportunity to apply and develop a wide range of practical skills by participating in activities in the tropical and Mediterranean biomes, the outdoor garden and nursery crop production facility. As well as benefiting from working alongside Eden’s skilled and specialist horticulturalists, you will also undertake a work placement within another commercial enterprise. In the final year of your study you will undertake a piece of novel research, for which it is encouraged to make full use of the available facilities to explore industry-related issues, that will enhance your CV on successful completion of the course.

City & Guilds Practical Horticulture skills - Grow Your Own (Dartington)

This Level 1 course will take place at School Farm, on the beautiful Dartington estate near Totnes, Devon. It is a great introduction for those who want to grow on any scale, whether it is a small patio garden, an allotment or on a larger piece of land. The School Farm site hosts a range of enterprises from vegetable growers to therapeutic horticulture and the course will be delivered by experienced growers and teachers from the enterprises. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in or some experience of gardening or plant knowledge, and can be enjoyed by enthusiastic beginners and more experienced gardeners alike. Students can expect 1 day a week of practical learning on the land in different seasons and weather conditions.

Award In Tree Climbing & Rescue

This training course is intended for those involved in tree climbing operations and leads to the NPTC Certificate of Competence to Climb Trees and Perform Aerial rescue. It does not involve use of a chainsaw, but covers the minimum requirement for a ground person working with a climber in arboriculture. As aerial rescue is obligatory, those attending should have a ‘head for heights’. Training takes place over the first 5 days with assessment on Day 6. On this course you will identify functions and fitting of specialist equipment, use and tying of specialist knots, pre-climbing equipment checks; identification of hazards such as overhead cables, role of the climber and of the ground person, secure working position, climbing techniques, branch walking, use of supplementary anchor points, storage of equipment and regulations (LOLER, PUWER).
