Ideal if:

This is ideal for those who want to re-train or re-direct their lives to realise their dreams of working professionally in the health and social care sector.

You’ll need:

Although there aren't any specific entry requirements, all applicants will be invited to attend an Access Workshop where full course information is given and you will be expected to complete the Initial Assessment and a written exercise.

Most healthcare based university degrees now stipulate that all applicants need to have at least a C grade in english and maths, therefore priority will be given to applicants who already meet these entry requirements.  On occasion, the Access and GCSE teams may allow applicants to sit one of the GCSE’s along the Access programme, but this will be at the discretion of the Course Managers and is usually only applicable if the applicant has achieved a grade D at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2 in the relevant subject.   If an applicant does not have either GCSE, it is highly recommended that they apply to Cornwall College GCSE faculty to achieve these prior to submitting an application for an Access course.

You’ll learn:

A range of subjects including -

  • Study Skills
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Social Policy
  • Biology

You will also be given advice on writing a personal statement and completing a UCAS application.

Expect:

The course runs from September until the end of June/early July. If you choose to study this Access course at our Saltash campus, you'll be expected to attend 2 days per week. The course may also run from Saltash 2 evenings and 1 full day per week (subject to course numbers).

This is a challenging course and it is expected that students will complete a minimum of 15 hours of independent study each week. Students may access college facilities on the days that they are not taught with some evening study available.

Please also be advised that most universities require work experience to complement your UCAS application-therefore it is highly recommended that you are working within the health care sector in either a voluntary or paid capacity.

You’ll love:

The high quality teaching you'll receive by subject specialists in a range of subject areas that will fully prepare you for studying at university level.

You’ll go on to:

Access courses are specially designed to prepare students for entry into Higher Education and provide the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to progress to a degree or diploma course at college or university. This will provide you with the entry requirements for a range of health degrees including; Adult Nursing, Child Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy etc.
