Hair & Media Make-Up Diploma

Cornwall College beauty student applying lipstick to a model If you are looking to begin an exciting career in the hair, make-up and media industry, and would like to eventually pursue a career in the theatre, film or television industry gaining a national qualification, then this course is for you.

You will learn excellent industry skills such as how to apply make-up, provide eyebrow and eyelash treatments, the art of photographic make-up, body art designs, colour and dress hair as well as make and style hair additions

What you will learn

At Level 2 you will gain an excellent range of skills which will provide you with a starting point towards a career in the industry. The course has been specifically designed to enable you to learn both aspects of Hairdressing and Media make-up.

Areas studied on the course include:

Unit 201 - Working in the beauty related industries
Unit 202 - Following health and safety practices in the salon
Unit 203 - Client care and communication in the beauty related industries
Unit 209 - Apply make-up
Unit 210 - Provide eyelash and eyebrow treatments
Unit 212 - Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
Unit 220 - The art of photographic make-up
Unit 221 - Body art design
Unit 223 - Apply skin care techniques
Unit 226 - The art of colouring hair
Unit 227 - The art of dressing hair
Unit 310 - Make and style hair additions

You will attend theory sessions that will support the knowledge and understanding.

Candidates will be expected to work independently producing research material, evidence and assignments

Entry requirements

You will need to have a minimum GCSEs at grades 4 – 9 in English and mathematics.

At Cornwall College, we recognise that applicants without these qualifications can often offer a high level of competence as well as life experience and we will therefore consider all applications on their merits alongside their qualifications.

If you are unsure as to whether or not you meet the requirements, please call the department and ask to speak to the study programme manager who will be happy to discuss it with you.

Work experience

You are expected to find an external work placement while on the course. This will help you gain valuable work experience to help you develop a career in this exciting industry. However, we have work place coordinators that can help you or you may be able to gain work experience in our own commercial Salons open to the public.

Assessment

You will be assessed in a realistic working environment. This could include shows and competitions as well as working on clients. Students will therefore need to be prepared to work both independently and as part of a team.

You will also be assessed through either written assignments or online multiple choice questions.

Progression

On successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-Up:

You could enter employment as a hair and media make-up artist.

You can progress on to the Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-Up or Level 2 Hairdressing courses.
