This department focuses on building your confidence in learning, employability and independent living with all programmes tailored to each individual learner, with effective teaching that involves providing each student with different avenues to learning, often in the same classroom. We have dedicated foundation learning areas and experienced tutors who will help you reach your full potential.
We offer courses for a wide range of learners; from those needing some extra support, those with learning difficulties, or those who simply want to spend some time developing core skills. Our courses are designed to focus on developing skills that can be used in any vocational area and enable you to try out numerous career paths before committing to a specific vocational course.
Following on from the Pathway 2 Employment Stage 1 course, if you have a genuine desire to get a job and you can demonstrate an excellent record of behaviour and attendance, plus you have Entry Level 2 English and maths, then this course is ideal for you. You will also need to have a current Education, Health and Care Plan and be 16 to 24 years of age. This course is designed to help you move forwards and develop your confidence both at work and at college. You should expect to carry out a two day per week work placement with an employer, supported by a skills job coach. You will also learn the skills you need to be successful in employment including English, maths and ICT.

To access this course you will need to have evidence of additional learning needs such as an EHC Plan. You will complete initial assessments to establish if you are suitable for the course and what level of study may be suitable for you.
The skills you’ll need to be successful in employment including English, mathematics and ICT.
- Two days per week in a work placement which may be supported by a Job Coach, who will work with both you and the employer to ensure that you feel confident to carry out the requirements of the job role.
- Maths and English - You will study maths and English at a level appropriate to you. These skills are studied in discrete sessions as well as being embedded throughout the whole curriculum.
- You could learn useful employability skills such as First Aid at work, manual handling, Health & Safety.
- You could engage in an enterprise project which will involve learning about budgeting, making profit etc. and setting up a micro business.
On the Pathway to Employment Stage 2 programme you will be assessed based on an individually tailored RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress & Achievement) programme (Developing Skills to Progress to Work) that focusses on individual targets and goals which are linked to outcomes set within and Education, Health and Care Plan as well as your individual goals and aspirations. Throughout the year your targets will be regularly reviewed and a portfolio of your learning will be produced.

Ruth has worked in education for over 15 years where she worked for Cornwall Learning delivering training to school
teaching and support staff who worked with young people with additional needs. Ruth works with her team at the College to constantly develop courses which are rich and varied.
