This course is ideal for those interested in pursuing a career as a Web Developer.

Web developers are the people who make today’s complex websites, including the ones you use every day. Developing websites is programming (software development, coding, scripting) and so can be challenging, but is also easy to start and good fun because you get quick results which you can share globally with others. HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and SQL among other languages are combined to produce the modern web where you can do almost anything.

Ideal if:

you like the idea of being part of the continuing move of everything to the web. From social media and e-commerce, to secure corporate databases, developers are needed to create web pages. There are possibilities in many areas of web development. from single page sites to worldwide applications which no one person can understand.

You’ll need:

5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and maths, or equivalent qualifications.

Mature students will be able to bring life experience and skills, but this can be discussed at interview.

You’ll learn:

Over the 2 years of your course you will study 18 units (9 in each year). You will cover core Web technologies including:

  • Creating Webpage content and structure with HTML
  • Styling the pages with CSS
  • Making those pages interactive with JavaScript
  • Handling multiple users and changing content with server-side scripting (PHP) and databases (SQL).

You will also look at how computers work and how IT-based systems such as Websites can be designed to do what businesses need them to do.  There is no other course available at this level which offers such a focused look at Web development.

The BTEC Extended Diploma is the equivalent of 3 A-levels so your options are many.

Web development takes a lot of practice just like most other practical activities. If you do that practise during the course you could be running your local business (creating small sites) by the end of it. If you prefer a more guided approach you can go on to university or do an apprenticeship and learn more in the workplace. Within the field of web development there are many jobs and which one you choose will depend on what you enjoy most.

Whichever path you choose you will need to be committed and enthusiastic to succeed in this area.  Web development is a booming industry, even after being around for a while now, but there is also a lot of competition.  You will need to stand out in some way and this unique course is a good start.

The average starting salary for a Programmer or Software Developer is about £22,000 a year with forecasts predicting 24,223 more jobs becoming available in the South West by 2020..
