This City & Guilds Diploma in Leadership for the Children & Young People’s Workforce – Early Years (Management/Advanced Practice) course is designed to guide and assess the development of the knowledge and skills relating to Children’s care, learning and development including those associated with leading teams and managing resources within an early years setting.

There are two pathways; one leading to management within early years and the other leading to advanced practice within this sector.

The management pathway is suitable for Assistant Managers and Deputy Managers working in day care provision who are looking to progress their career. The advanced practice pathway is geared towards senior practitioners who would like to develop their career but wish to remain active practitioners within the management framework.

Ideal if:

You are an early years practitioner or supervisor and you are looking to progress in your career to either a management/leadership role or to take on responsibility for more advanced practice.

The qualification will confer occupational competence to work in a management role.

You’ll need:

You must be aged 19 or over and be working in a role that has the potential and opportunity to gain evidence for the qualification.

You must also hold an appropriate level 3 qualification related to the early years sector and you should have a  good level of Maths and English – GCSE Grade C or above in English & maths.

All applicants will be required to attend an interview with the course tutor.

You’ll learn:

This qualification has been designed to extend and enrich your understanding of the early years sector and develop/enhance the practical leadership and management knowledge and skills required to manage change and lead service improvement.

The course will cover -

  • How to develop higher level thinking skills including reflection and critical analysis.
  • Develop provision for family support.
  • Support others to promote children's knowledge and understanding of the world and their physical development in an early year's setting .
  • Undertake a research project within services for health and social care or children and young people.
  • Explore models of disability.
  • Develop, maintain and use records and reports.
  • Appraise staff performance.

These are just some of the topics that will be covered. You will also choose from a list of optional units depending on whether you choose to do the management or advanced practice pathway.

Expect:

The course will be delivered using a blended learning combination of attendance at college, use of a virtual learning area from home or workplace, independent research tasks and activities.

Skype is available to join in with the class if you were not able to attend on campus and you will have access to resources through the college learning centres throughout Cornwall.
