A-level Further Mathematics

If you really enjoy and are good at mathematics then you should consider further mathematics. This course extends and develops the knowledge gained in A-level Mathematics as well as introducing new topics in the pure section of the course such as matrices and complex numbers. The subject is recommended for many mathematically based degree courses at university particularly in mathematics,physics and engineering.

Ideal if:

You have a particular liking for and ability in Mathematics. This course extends and develops some of the knowledge gained in A-Level Mathematics as well as introducing new topics in the Pure section of the course such as matrices and complex numbers.
It may be studied alongside or after taking A-Level Mathematics. It is a very useful A-level to have and is recommended for many degree courses particularly Mathematics, Physics, Economics and Engineering.
In fact, some universities insist on at least an AS-level in Further Mathematics if you are going on to study Mathematics at this level.

You’ll need:

At least five GCSEs at grade C or grade 5, or above, including English and mathematics and at least a grade A or grade 7 or 8, in mathematics.

You’ll learn:

- Series, complex numbers, matrices, inequalities, proof and differential equations
- Inequalities
- Newton's laws of motions, moments, centres of mass
- Binomial and Poisson distributions,samples, hyphothesis tests

We believe that Further Mathematics is an enjoyable and rewarding subject and an excellent support to a wide range of careers. Members of the Maths team use a variety of teaching strategies to ensure that the experience of students is both enjoyable and successful.
We are very committed to offering workshops across the week and this provides a strong support programme designed to provide appropriate extension material or timely support for students.
In addition, we aim to seek ways to enrich and extend the Mathematics we teach; including an awareness of the wide range of courses and careers, where Mathematics plays an important if not crucial role.

Further Mathematics is generally taught in small groups of like minded and enthusiastic students.
