Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship

Cornwall College Business St Austell LEVEL: 2 Motor Vehicle

As an apprentice, you’ll be working as a service technician (level 2)/diagnostic technician (level3).

You could be employed by an independent garage working with many different vehicle brands or specialize within a dealership of a particular manufacturer. Vehicle maintenance repair is challenging and rewarding, providing a combination of routine activity and problem solving. You will therefore need to be able study technical information in order to support practical activity and demonstrate skill and competence within your workplace.

This apprenticeship is designed for people who want to train on the job and gain a package of multi-nationally recognized qualifications in vehicle maintenance and repair.

Entry Requirements:

To enroll in this apprenticeship, you need to be aged 16 and over and ideally have GCSEs in English & maths Grade C or above. You must be employed in a supportive and appropriate workplace.

What You Will Learn:

You will attend St Austell campus 1 day per week for 2 years at each level, while the remainder of the week is spent in the workplace.

You will study through a combination of lectures, online learning, practical tuition and on the job training which will be assessed through written assessment/assignments, impartial online assessments, practical skills assessment in a simulated environment and competency assessment in the workplace by observation and the production of evidence.

During this apprenticeship you will demonstrate Knowledge, Skills and Competency in the following areas: routine maintenance, engine, auxiliary electrical, chassis/frame and transmission whilst holistically incorporating study and assessment in Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping, Supporting Job Roles, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices.

You will construct a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent at the tasks you do every day, while receiving support from experienced Cornwall College tutors.

Expect:

Upon successful completion at level two you will be awarded the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Competence
  • Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles
  • Level 2 Award in Knowledge of Employee Rights and Responsibilities for the automotive sector
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in Mathematics
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in ICT

Upon successful completion at level three you will be awarded the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Competence
  • Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles
  • Level 2 Award in Knowledge of Employee Rights and Responsibilities for the automotive sector
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in Mathematics
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in ICT

Progression:

The Level 2 framework is an intermediate program; you will be semi-skilled technician in vehicle maintenance and repair. Thereafter you can start working towards the Level 3 framework by enrolling in the advanced apprenticeship.

In the future, you could work as a vehicle technician, auto electrician, MOT Tester, (After meeting VOSA requirements) start your own business or teach vehicle maintenance and repair (after training). You may be interested in continuing your apprenticeship studies through Cornwall College Business and enroll in the team leading, people management, vehicle body and paint operations or vehicle parts and operations apprenticeship.
