AAT Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship

This accountancy apprenticeship is for those wanting to train on the job and gain an industry recognised qualification.

An assistant accountant provides support to internal and external customers and will work predominately either as an assistant accountant within practice or alternatively within the finance function of an organisation. Part of their role will involve assisting in the day to day financial activities such as data entry to month end management accounts and/or year-end financial statements. In addition the assistant accountant may find themselves involved in regulatory financial requirements such as the completion of VAT returns or assisting in the preparation of tax computations.

An apprenticeship is a great way to gain a qualification and earn real money. At the end of the course, you can have a nationally recognised qualification.

You want to gain on the job experience whilst studying.

Entry Requirements:

To be aged 18 and over, have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C (ideally in English and maths) and be employed in a relevant job.

You must enjoy working in an office environment and be good with numbers. A commitment to study outside college attendance is important.

What You Will Learn:

During this course, you will learn more complex accountancy processes e.g. final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, reports and returns and professional ethics.

You'll also cover -

  • Advanced Bookkeeping- consolidates and introduces new areas such as accounting for non-current assets and using the extended trial balance. You will deal with adjustments for closing inventory, accrued and prepaid expenses and income, and how these are incorporated into an extended trial balance. Provisions for depreciation on non-current assets, irrecoverable debts and allowances for doubtful debts are also to be calculated and accounted for.
  • Final Accounts Preparation- This unit is concerned with preparing final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, incorporating elements of dealing with incomplete records, and an appropriate understanding of the principles that underpin the preparation of final accounts.
  • Management Accounting: Costing- You will develop an understanding of how costs are handled in organisations, and why different organisations treat costs in different ways. You should be able to recognise different approaches to cost accounting and make informed and reasoned judgements to guide management.

Upon successful completion, you could progress to the AAT Level 4 Diploma.

Expect:

You will be required to submit a portfolio of evidence to the AAT for review and undertake a professional discussion.

Progression:

Upon successful completion, you can progress onto the AAT Professional Accounting Technician Apprenticeship offered by Cornwall College and become a fully qualified Association of Accounting Technician.
